Stories to savour
This is the first series of short stories that H E Bates wrote at the tender age of 23 - but you would never know it. The insightfulness of the stories are written with a maturity that we came to expect from Bates.Even in this early series, his descriptions are so vivid, you can smell the rain falling in the woods, or feel the sun under your feet in the grass. But these stories are far from what we came to know of the lustiness of Ma and Pop Larkin or the tense war books like "Fair Stood the Wind for France" or the wonderfully evocative "The Sleepless Moon" (my favourite). These are mostly bleak -featuring loneliness, like the Baker's Wife who married the wrong man or the Shepherd whose newborn baby dies at the same time his lambs are being born outside. There are 25 stories in total and they are a must read if you want to know Bates from the very beginning.I would like the thank Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book.

The English Chekhov?
Part of Bloomsbury's e-printing of HE Bates, this is a collection of 25 short stories.Bates is a quiet and sensitive writer, so these are more about internal movements in the lives of his characters rather than momentous external events. Recommended if you like the stories of Chekhov with whom Bates has been compared.

Day's End and Other Stories
This is a collection of twenty six short stories. As I'd never read anything by this author before it seemed to be a good place to start. Unfortunately this collection has put me off wanting to read anything more by H E Bates. His evocation of the countryside and rural living is excellent - hence the three stars I have given this book - which is perhaps over-generous. That said, I didn't like any of the characters or the situations they were in. Almost every character is living a life which is making them unhappy and they all refuse to either do anything about it or take the opportunities which are offered them which I found distinctly annoying. In a way the stories reminded me of the worst of Thomas Hardy and left me with a feeling of depression and the idea that there is nothing good in life. Fortunately that feeling didn't last but I shan't be reading any more books by this author. I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley for review.

Not quite so satisfying as his other collection of stories ("Dandelion Sky" collection for example), but enjoyable nevertheless
