Guillermo can do a lot better.
I bought the special edition dvd to watch this kaiju film for the first time. Not seeing PR in the cinema was lucky, as my first impression was that it's a leave-your-brain-at-home, cheesy, campy, kid's movie. There's no great nudity, sex scenes or swearing in it. However, after watching the film a few times and seeing the bonus content on disc two, I've come to appreciate the making of it. If you're a builder of robots you'll know that giant mechs are implausible because of the weight-to-power problem: The heavier and massive the robot mech is, the bigger and stronger the servo motors you'll need to move it. Bigger motors means added weight, so you'll need stronger servos to move the added weight, and so on until the weight-to-power ratio becomes a losing game. The kaiju genre is Japanese, but there's scant representation of Japan here, except a token Asian girl (played by the stunning Rinko Kikuchi), but her role is played down and somewhat putdown by her overly angry, stupidly yelling, Western counterparts. The acting is over-the-top dramatic and the tension between characters is so forced and artificial that it seems like a parody of the genre. There's a couple of Australians (still Westerners!) whose dialogue is incomprehensible (without English subtitles on) that they might as well be speaking a strange foreign language. Incidentially, I'm not sure why they've portrayed a harmful neural interface ('drift' as they've called it) since the mech is obviously slaved to the driver's physical movements like a puppet through an analogue haptic suit and not controlled via their brain. In the bonus content, the concept artists say they've looked at big, real world excavation machinery as reference for scale, but we don't get the scope or scale here like we do in Cloverfield (which is a kaiju-inspired film) or Gareth Edward's Monsters (and also his Godzilla film), each of which seem to have better CGI renders and physics (it could also be about camera angles and pov?). The artists should have looked at the life-sized Gundam kinetic statue in Yokohama, or even the Liberty statue on Liberty Island, from ground level for more appropriate scale references. Strangely, Gillermo has applied this annoying lens fog or 'haze' over every scene that typically low budget films use to hide cheap and awful visual effects and CGI (so, essentially Gillermo has made a mega expensive movie look like a low budget one!). Anyway, if you're a rabid fan of Michael Bay-tarded films, you'll be a big fan of this cheddar; there's lots of fighting, big explosions, cgi to beat the band, and virtually no plot or character development to get you thinking. I won't hold my breath that the sequel, Uprising, is any better. If you actually want to see a dexterous mechsuit, look up Hacksmith's Aliens Powerloader videos on youtube, it doesn't walk (it rolls on catipillar tracks) but it's the closest thing yet to a real life mech suit.

Far, Far better than I was expecting.
So here's the thing. My friends saw this a few months ago and they all told me it was terrible. I watched Youtube reviews and read Cracked.com articles on how bad it was.So I watched this one night when I wanted to see a crappy film about giant monsters fighting giant robots. And you know what? I thought it was great! From what I've read/been told I'm wondering if the theatrical version was somehow edited to remove vital parts. My friends (At great length) told me about all the plot holes and silly things that just don't make sense, and the articles and reviews highlighted all the crazy things about the story.I never saw them. Admittedly there's a few tiny bits that you have to accept as being part of the film, but on the whole this is FAR better than all the Transformers films (and anything else made by Bay), better than most of the 'alien invasion blockbusters' I've seen in the past few years (Skyline, Battle LA, etc.) I'd say this is up there with Independence Day. So I've no idea why it got so much hate from people that I would have thought should have loved it.Anyway, If you're even slightly interested by the idea of robots fighting aliens in a post-alien invasion world, then give it a shot!

Great Action Robot film
Totally great pure action Built Robots to go against Monsters but the best the how they’ve built these robots was that’s they have 2 or 3 people inside the robot to go against the Monsters if you are looking to watch ‘Pacific Rim’ make sure you got some food & a drink next to you as this movie is absolutely great & you will not wanna miss a bit of it at all i mean from START TO END.

Big Budget B Movie
If you're expecting Oscar winning acting or a plot to make you consider the meaning of life then stop reading and go and buy something else.I think the acting and plot are perfect for what this film is intended to be, which is a big budget update of those old black and white Monster movies. Its MEANT to be cheesy, simple and predictable. They had cheesy characters, dialogue and plot and so does this.If you can accept all that and just sit back, relax and watch, this is a very enjoyable and visually amazing film, particularly in 3d.I dont often rewind a scene while watching a film but after being blown away by the main battle roughly halfway through the film i had to. In 3d, the mixture of the massive Jaegers and Kaijus moving and fighting through the colours of the neon lit city with sparks flying, blu acid squirting and bits of city, Jaeger and Kaiju flying round was problably one of the most visually amazing things I've ever seen.I can understand some people not getting this, though 1/5 scores are just hysterical over-reactions, but if you enjoyed films such as the Transformers films without moaning that it was just Robots hitting each other then you're going to enjoy this!Cheers

Forgive the lengthy exposiyion at the beginning and hang on and watch a thorougly enjoyable film.
A fun last half made up for an understandably rushed beginning that nearly had me stop watching the film. Admittedly, a lot had to be explained and I wonder if the director was forced by the studio to do the lengthy prologue - maybe the director had the intention to tell us about why machines operated by humans were fighting huge monsters during the story in sort of flash backs but was not allowed to as the studios seem to assume that we are stupid and have to be told everything quickly or we will lose interest? maybe not, but the vast "exposition" nearly lost me and that would have been a pity as it turned into a good film).Anyway, I loved the fighting, hated most of the characters at least until the very end, and was amazed by the special effects. I may be wrong but I almost sensed that the Jauger were a tribute to "Optimus Prime" the huge robot from Fallout 3; and that isn't a bad thing. An enjoyable 2 hours and I certainly didn't feel I had wasted my time watching it.
