Great work from a talented writer
Better Safe Than Sorry: The Sgt. Windflower Mystery Series Book 14 by Mike Martin continues on the story of Winston Windflower with a new mystery that rocks the small town he serves. Windflower is simply trying to enjoy his retirement when new deaths emerge that are connected to a drug that is spreading into the area. Windflower comes out of retirement to help solve the case but new mysteries soon arise that make the situation far more challenging. This book and the series it is part of is meant for fans of mysteries and thrillers. The characters feel real and the setting makes the story even more intense because of the sense of isolation from larger groups of people and cities. It is impressive that the series has gone for 14 books, and the author should be commended not only for his talent in writing but also in his vision for such a long lasting character.

Couldn't put it down.
Confession time. Stories with retired law enforcement reluctantly thrust back into whatever role they’ve previously held is a long-time indulgence for me. Movies, tv shows, books—it’s that reticence that gets me. Every time. This is my first Sgt. Windflower mystery and I was eager to give this a read. So what did I think?Story opened centering me on where Winston Windflower was and what was going on. That’s a rather lame attempt at pointing out that this story is immersive from the first page, but I’m too lazy to delete the previous sentence. The chapters are relatively short for cozy mysteries, but I found it useful as I was reading this book during breaks throughout the day and I appreciated that I could fit in 3-4 chapters before having to pause, and then once I got home, I settled in to finish the book before doing anything else. Did I mention it was immersive—into small-town life? It’s also engaging, humorous, and very enjoyable.

A great series
"Better Safe Than Sorry: The Sgt. Windflower Mystery Series Book 14" by Mike Martin takes the reader into the life of Winston Windflower. I've read a handful of these books, and they're always enjoyable. In this story, Winston is trying to relax and enjoy his retirement from his life in law enforcement when events happen that force him to get back into the career that had caused family friction and too much stress. However, circumstances had other plans than his relaxation, and he gets back to working with other characters like Carrie, Eddie, and colorful bad guys who may or may not cooperate to help him solve the many cases falling in his lap all at once. Is even the intrepid Winston Windflower finally in over his head?

Like Windflower, sometimes I cry
I spent several years working in Labrador and recently spent 3 weeks in Newfoundland and the Maritimes. Reading this book, more than the previous ones, brings back many joyful memories and familiar scenes culminating in an emotional moment reading the Epilogue. I love the relationships that have developed through the series as well as the food, the scotch and the classical music descripions. As I read the final chapters, I had Brahms Symphony No. 4 playing in the background, although it eventually took over my reading.
