If you like his other efforts, you will enjoy this book. Unique character development and realism are hallmarks of Mr. Kantor.4 1/2 stars!

Kantor was the author of "Glory for Me", the source of the film "The Best Years of Our Lives", and Pulitzer-Prize-winner "Andersonville".He cites journals of soldiers and short stories in his extended Bibliography, as well as sources at the Library of Congress. The book reads as if the words are taken directly from the journals, and we get to witness the experiences of soldiers, officers, a horse, a dog…as well as George and Martha Washington, Lafayette, and von Steuben.We learned in school about the hard winter of starving men in rags trying to hold out at Valley Forge in the hope of a better future for themselves and their new country, but this book brings it all to life.
