Great for long term storage
The ten years shelf life makes this particularly useful for saving for emergencies. Batteries have a shorter shelf life than that.Every type of light source has its pros and cons. This has definite positives. But a few drawbacks. This is more for stationary lighting. Not so much for hiking. The bag does seem to seal well, but with too much jostling, eventually the top will probably start leaking. It does seem to be designed to stand up on its own well.I do wish the on button was a sliding switch instead of a push button. It is harder to be sure if the button is in the on or off position before adding the salt and water mixture. The only reason I care about that is because it can take a few minutes to get the salt dissolved and at the proper ratio to run the light and I would rather not turn the light on until it is at the ideal conditions. But that is just a personal preference. The directions are pretty clear. There is the appropriate amount of salt included.120 hours is a good amount of lighting time, especially if used carefully. One of the best things about this lighting option is how good it would be to keep kids entertained, especially in an emergency scenario. Anything that helps morale is a definite plus.I am very happy with this and am adding it to my emergency bag.

A Smart Supply To Have For BUGOUTS OR Emergencies Of Any Kind!
The media could not be loaded. To begin, I have never heard of a "salt water lamp" before so when I came across the Lapond Salt Water Lamp I must admit that my curiousity was piqued! It is easy to bring into functionality, unzip seal the lap pouch and then just poor the pre-measured bag of salt (30 grams) into the Salt Water Lamp and next fill with water to the fill line on the back side of the pouch. Seal the zip pouch and gently shake to mix the salt and water and you're good to go!You can use virtually any type of salt on subsequent uses of the salt water lamp, iodized table salt, coarse or fine, sea salt ... you get the picture. It is advertised to be re-useable, just rinse it out real good then allow it to drip dry upside down, once dry just seal the pouch zipper and stow the lamp away for another use on a nother day.I think that an easy way to guesstimate 30 grams of salt on subsequet uses if you do not have a scale that can weight grams, it appears as though a somewhat heaping Tablespoon would be within that range. The salt water lamp offers bright and dim plus strobe/SOS lighting by a press of the power switch. You can use the salt water lamp as a lantern when hiking even, it is extremely versatile in the sense of how it can serve your lighting needs. The salt water lamp does not broadcast a spot type of light beam, rather it is more of a soft flood type of illumination. The lumens factor is very nice overall as you could hang a few of these overhead inside of your camping area, or tent or whatever to illuminate your immediae zone without glaring light as you can dim it when needed.

Fantastic Piece of Gear
These are extremely handy to have around for emergencies. With careful use and storage they can be reused a few times as well. This one produces a fairly strong light for about 4 days non-stop. Because of the way it works, and how it was designed, this is really going to be a LOT more useful as a stationary light source; I don't really see anyone successfully trying to do a night hike with this as the light source. When folded down, it takes up very little space and is perfect for a BOB set-up. The obvious drawback is that you need a lot of salt to use this thing with any frequency. You also need to clean it up really well between uses to minimize corrosion. As emergency gear, it is a fantastic piece of kit to have on hand.

Emergency Backup
I got this LAPOND salt water lamp to take with me in my backpack in case of an emergency. I like to do long day hikes, sometimes up to 20 miles, and I like to have some emergency gear with me in case I get injured, lost, or something else and have to survive in a remote location. While I always carry a conventional battery powered lamp, this salt water lamp looks like a good emergency backup. I don't intend to try it now since I prefer to keep it in the sealed package, so I can't say how well it works. However, I know the concept behind this lamp works, and it looks like it is well made. The instructions are clearly written, and it comes with the needed salt in the package. Everything is there except water, and the package states that it can even be used with urine. I hope I never need to use this in an emergency, but I like the idea of being ready in case I do.

Bright light, easy to use. Good addition to emergency kit
I mixed up some salt water with our table salt and kept the pre-packaged salt to keep with this in our emergency bag. The light is very bright and illuminates a decent area. It is compact, about the size of a single serving sized chip bag but flat and about the thickness of a pack of playing cards. The seal of the bag closes securely and does not leak. The plastic bag is thick and not easy to puncture, although it is still important to be conscientious of how and where you pack this in your emergency supplies so you don't damage it. For example, I wouldn't put it next to the multi-tool axe or fish hooks. Common sense... but still worth saying if it helps just one person. It can be rinsed and dried out to be reused at a later time. It could be useful to make a few ziplock bags with salt in them to have easily ready and on hand to power your salt lamps in emergencies if you plan on rinsing and drying them to reuse during power outages etc.I'm happy with the lamp that I received and plan on getting more for my emergency bags. It's really useful to be able to have light without needing electricity or batteries.5 stars
