Enjoyable as usual
Every New Year's Day I look forward to watching and hearing this wonderful concert from the incomparable setting of the Musikveriensaal (Golden Hall of the Society of the Friends of Music) in Vienna, Austria. Each year the program manages to be that much different from the year before, adding little-known or first performance music along with the more familiar Strauss family and Co. selections.Ever since the passing many years ago of the founder of these concerts, the late violinist/conductor Willy Boskovsky the Vienna Philharmonic picks a guest conductor each year to lead them in this concert. This year the honor went to Christian Thielemann who did a fine job of leading the orchestra in a varied selection of standard and lesser known gems as well as several first performances for this concert..This concert was extra special as it commemorated the 200th anniversary of the birth of native Austrian composer Anton Bruckner by premiering one of his lesser known orchestral works - a premiere I believe. But back to the concert itself. The Vienna Phil has all this music in its collective blood so Maestro Theilemann gently coaxed the magnificent ensemble to just do its thing. That is the beauty of the New Year's concerts - there is as a rule very little ego on display or "interpretation" for the sake of being different though that has happened on occasion - but that is the subject of another review, not this one. The music is wonderfully, effortlessly performed and will put a smile on your face and evoke images of a better time gone by. You forget your troubles and all else as you listen to this marvelous music played by one of the world's top orchestras (some say the best, but that is yet another discussion!).The highlight of the concert and all its predecessors is the finale which features the Blue Danube followedby a surprise encore. Then the conductor gives the annual New Year's salutation and then the grand finale., the Radetsky March by Johann Strauss II. with the audience clapping to the music on cue (though the audience could do this on their own!). So buy both the CD and the DVD - the CD is slightly abridged. Sit back and enjoy, It's the next best thing to being in Vienna - and no jet lag!

Un concierto excelente
La edición de este año con Thielemann conduciendo me ha gustado mucho. Es magnífica y con una magistral toma de sonido, que agradecerá un buen equipo hi-fi. Muy recomendable.
