Not What You Think
If you buy this expecting to read about a motorcycle adventure story you will be very disappointed! Rarely is his motorcycle even mentioned. The occasional mention is all you will get. 99% of the book he may as well been traveling by car, boat or airplane since the stories about the cities and places he visits has nothing to do with traveling by motorcycle. This is all well and good had the title and cover photo of the book been something different. It is a very deceiving book as titled.

Jarringly racist
While there are some interesting sections, such as the author's visit to Pompeii and Sri Lanka, there are huge gaps in his accounts. At times the summary is so shallow as to make reading a task. Much worse, though, is the blatant racism and white supremacy that Clancy exhibits. He calls inter-racial marriage a horror and calls "the typical Malay" "a mixture of Chinese and monkey." Though he is elsewhere complementary of the physical beauty of the chines as well as their industriousness, his account is filtered through a veil of white supremacy. I'm not for banning books, but this should come with a warning.

Vintage writing
A great story from over 100 years ago. What life was like when cycles first came out. Adventure, sudpence, and reflections throughout.

a great story
A fantastic motorcycle adventure but more than that, this book is a glimpse back in time, over 100 years to the wold of 1912.

The Gasoline Tramp by Carl Stearns Clancy - Loved it
Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman, please doff your caps and take a bow to Mr. Carl Stearns Clancy. Dublin, October 1912, barely out of his teens, intrepid American Carl Sterns Clancy sets out to ride his Henderson motorcycle around the world. In the wonderfully descriptive language of the day, Clancy takes us along on his amazing voyage of discovery. This is a wonderful book, far more than a motorcycle adventure, and there's enough adventure to keep any enthusiast happy, but a book of true historical value. For anybody with an interest in adventure travel, this book must be their starting point. I absolutely loved it.In Clancy’s own words, this is the book that was almost never written. But, thanks to the painstaking dedication of motorcycle adventurist Dr. Gregory W. Frazier, it lives.

a superb insight into a pioneers journey
An incredible account of a journey - shame there are no accompanying photographs to give us a real sense of the places visited.
