I got this to help my catalogue various items in various collections (CD/DVD/Books etc...) as well as for tracking inventory and serial numbers on some items I sell.The scanner is a nice sized device that fits well in the hand and is easy to use (mostly), the UI is clear and easy to read. The default beep is loud, really loud. But thankfully you can lower that, and turn off the vibration motor is you wish as well.You have a few modes of operation; Scan, Collect and Inventory. Scan works as expected, scan it and it will appear in your choosen application as if typed (mostly), Collect and Inventory store scanned results with a couple of differences in that Inventory records quantity, not just the scanned code. These can then be exported via keyboard input, or file transfer.The scanner easily handles pretty much any barcode format as well as QR-Codes with ease, allowing you to quickly gather information.The UI is generally self explanatory and is fairly easy to follow, this is handy as the manual is a little lacking in some areas.There are some issues:- The wireless function is a little tetchy, you have to re-pair the cradle every use, and make sure the little signal inicator appears on the handset. After that it works fine.- The keyboard input over the wired connection seems a bit twitchy, scanning a barcode into Notepad it would not always scan the complete code, but if you then pressed a key on the PC more of the code would appear, even setting the transmission speed to the slowest would not solve this. It seems to be a USB buffering issue. However wireless scanning worked a treat without any issues.- The above also applied to transmitting the Collect or Inventory data over the wired connection, again over wireless I had no issues.- The file export feature works well once you find the software that is hidden on their site. Look under 'Products>Data Collector>S-7103T' and then you'll find it. Place the software in a folder before using as it creates a few directories and such. The exported data can be imported into EXCEL as Tab Seperated Values (TSV)- The upgrade menu option is of no use as the upgrade softwear is not available (while the updated firmware is)It's a decent scanner that once you get over the minor flaws works well and scans reliably, being aware of the issues/hiccups in the user experience will help you get the most out of it.
