An inventive blend of horror and science fiction.
The blurb for this book I found posted on Amazon intrigued me: confronting an ancient horror like a bloodsucker with modern high-tech. Toss in an unearthly menace and alien intrigue, and I was hooked. Only problem was this was the 5th entry in a series. Digging a little deeper, I found it was the second part of a 2-part prequel to a 3-book series. That may sound confusing, but it’s actually a much better situation. In the series timeline, there was only 1 book prior to this one. After a horrific opening, the book quickly caught me up on what had transpired before, while dropping me into a withering heat wave in a small Texas town. The setting was gritty, the characters were engaging, the action was intense, and the creature was an original take on bloodsuckers (hint – it’s not Count Dracula). Several good night battles take place. All the while the narrative draws you into the much more complex tale of what was to come in the rest of the series. An inventive blend of horror and science fiction, with the lure of at least 3 more books to continue with.

An exciting, satisfying mystery
Cicada Serenade is a real page turner, a genuine science fiction mystery. I’m not going to ruin the story by giving too much away, but you’ll gasp at the ending. The story unfolds as the characters face the circumstances and each other. The characters are well developed and you find yourself caring what happens to each of them. I enjoyed the book and I’m not a hard core sci-fi reader, but I do love a good mystery. If you love a good mystery with a great story to go with it...this is your book. Highly recommend.

I Couldn't put it down
My wife (Elda V) and I both read this unique novel. While our reasons vary we agreed it was truly good reading. The characters and situations became real to me: the hot summer temperatures, the unique pairing of the two lead characters, the intriguing transitions from alien to earthly worlds, unexpected deaths, etc. I found myself emotionally involved but also not surprised because I've enjoyed Gregory's past writings, as well. Nathan Gregory has a creative imagination and I feel privileged that he shares it with us so well. I am a confirmed fan.

Wording is very dense
The writing makes it hard to get through. Some people might like that, but I am more of a fast pace edge of my seat fan.
