Rosie Bird's Guide to Small Exotic Birds: Bird Care Extraordinaire

I highly recommend this book!The author really knows what she is talking about, as she has raised birds for decades. You can tell she cares for her birds (and all birds) tremendously; along with this book, she has a YouTube channel (Rosie Bird) and a blog (The Splendid Bourke Bird Blog) in which all her knowledge can also be found.This is a great book for beginners and experienced people alike; the author writes in an easy to understand style, unlike many other avian books, and covers many little-mentioned bird types, the focus being mainly on Bourke Parakeets. The author also has information about Lineolated Parakeets, Finches, Splendid Parakeets, and Turquoisine Parakeets, as well as Cockatiels, although these don't feature as much as the others. Very few books mention these birds in depth like this one does. The book has sections on selecting a bird (with intros to many species), cages (appropriate types for individual bird species, and also aviaries) diet (with an egg food recipe), breeding (how to sex, mate, raise, hand feed, maintain records, and much more), health (what to do to save an egg bound hen, diseases, and more), bird safety, and even a special section for Bourke Parakeets, which are the author's specialty. There are also instructions on how to build a nest box and incubator.This is an invaluable book and will tremendously increase your success in keeping pet birds, especially if you plan to breed.I believe this is a must read for anyone who is interested in keeping pet birds.

I am so happy with Rosie Bird’s book. Gail has filled this book with all kinds of knowledge. I feel more prepared with my small birds now that I have read her book!

What a wonderful book . Well written and full of lessons on how to care and raise Exotic small Birds , and what to watch for.I loved reading all about building Nest box, a incubator for small bird eggs if something goes wrong with parents not being able to care for the clutch.If you want to know everything Mrs Lewis knows about small birds I can say this book is very valuable .Did you know there is a way to talk to birds ?This book is a must have if you are thinking of breeding, nesting and Brooding small birds.Mrs Lewis has really done a great job with detailed Subjects that can and will happen on the road a head raising pet birds or for raising and rehoming small birds .She has a heart of Gold for these little ones.Thank you Rosie Bird for putting all these helps in a book .I am one who is grateful for all you’ve given in print to save others many heart aches .Also for all the insights for me to look forward to the Joys of caring for a exotic Bird.I read ,under lined ,many sentences in this book .I read it cover to cover could not put it down .Much Love for Birds.

This book has been a wonderful resource for me as I’m entering the world of keeping and breeding bourkes parakeets. It has pretty much all the information you need on the subject. For the few additional questions I had, I emailed the author directly and she was extremely kind and helpful. Definitely if you’re interested in small birds, don’t hesitate to order it!

Exactly what I was looking for

This book is just amazing. So much helpful information including feeding, care, and building nest boxes which was the main reason I bought it. It is written well with clear pictures and great description. Will be recommending this to everyone!

This book has great information on the care and breeding of small parrots like the Bourke's. The pictures are very helpful and you can tell that Gail has many years of knowledge on these small birds! :)

Kinda out of date, but cute

I'll be honest, I haven't read a lot of bird books. I had started my journey with pigeon and streamed down the line ending at Rosey Bourkes. I have bred many birds and have spent a lot of time referencing videos and web info. If I had found this book sooner it would've saved me a lot of time.This book is packed with ton of great info on each page. I find myself making notes everywhere. It's truly a valuable book and it's a delight to read. If you haven't yet seen her rosie bird channel on youtube, do take a look. She is gentle and kind. She truly shows passion for her birds. . Indulge and get a copy. Become comfortable with birds and even with breeding if you like. It is truly a rewarding passion and Gail is a kind soul that will lead you along the way. Truly a blessing! enjoy your journey. These are the sweetest birds ever!!

I discovered Rosie Bird on youtube when I was learning more about my two Bourke's parakeets. This book is really useful and the author, Gail Lewis is very knowledgeable and experienced. I absolutely admire her passion for her birds. She's also very helpful when you ask something more specific, etc. Thank you Gail.I highly recommend this book. It is so easy to read and I always refer to it if there is something I am not sure of.

Informative book with quite a bit of information and easy to understand. The author shares her passion and I would even say it's a bit contagious. I have a preference for straight beaks and have several....after reading this I had a sudden desire to acquire a couple of "bourkies".

Great book. Gail has so much knowledge on birds. I've got rosa bourkes and no books have any information on them. This book has and it's a great book written from a lady who loves birds and knows them so well. I have emailed her a few times and she always answers even with her busy life to help us bird lovers.

I recently purchased my first pair of Bourke Parakeets and was very unsure if I was doing things correctly. Gale's book has been very helpful and I find myself referring to it often! It covered all the topics I was unsure of. It's hard to find anyone else who has such a commitment to these lovely gentle birds. Would definitely recommend this book to Bourke caretakers.
