Jacob's Ladder Reading Comprehension Program: Grades 1-2

Excited to use this to further challenge my Kindergartener
This book is a "guide" to helping teach and guide kids through reading comprehension. It was suggested to us by our Kindergartener's teacher in this virtual school year, as he needs more challenge than he can receive virtually. This was a pretty easy guide for us as non-teacher parents to help us keep him learning and growing. it is clearly laid out, has a list of the books you'll need in order to complete the work, and has an extensive "how to" guide in the introductory text, that can be understood by anyone, not just teachers or educators. One thing to note, that one of the previous reviewers apparently didn't realize, is that the "stories" are books that are separate from the Jacob's Ladder text. You have to get the other books to read in order to use the questions. The book provides a quick overview of the book mentioned, not the full text. For example, "Ella Sarah Gets Dressed" is a full color book that is available in our elementary school library and the local library. You need to have both the book AND this guide for it to be effective. I would highly suggest reading the introductory text first before trying to utilize this program. It was helpful to understand how the guide will challenge students and how best to implement it.We haven't started this yet, but so far it meets the expectations that I have, and from here, it's really up to us to use it.

Great book list but questions way too challenging
Love the program, but really, am I the only one to find it odd that the level of books are rather low for second graders but the level of questions are super challenging, like at least 4-5th grade level?I feel discouraged to do the questions with my second grader.

Odd questions - Information is missing from the text and no answer key
Some of the questions cannot be answered with the text provided. For example, in the story Ella Sarah Gets Dressed, one of the questions was about the use of colors by the author. The picture is black and white and there is no mention of any specific colors in the text. There are the words "striking" and "flamboyant", but nothing else. Another question asked about the character's response when she wasn't permitted to wear what she wanted. Her parents never stated she couldn't wear what she wanted. They just advised her to wear something more typical. Finally, this book has no answer key. My guess is that it was not provided since it is supposed to be used with K-1 students. I just wanted to see how they answered their own questions.I do like the text but it is not anything I would give my K-1 students. I would give it to maybe 2-3 who are avid readers. I think it works well for 4 graders and struggling 5th grade readers.

Reading comprehension practice
You will still need to find the books listed in the guide. The guide only has blurbs for the selections. The library should have them all.

K-1 grade book has questions outside of the content given in the passage.
Almost all of the passage questions in grade k-1 book ask for information that was never mentioned in the passage. This problem is for each and every passage. It seems like someone decided to shorten the passages (possibly to suite for K-1 level) but never bothered to change the questions accordingly. For eg: on page 32, the question says "why did the boy take a picture of himself and then throw the camera back into the water?". But the passage does not even mention about the boy taking pictures or about throwing the camera. It is very disappointing to see that neither the author not the editor even bothered to check for such glaring errors in the book on each and every passage. We had to return the book for this issue. We had bought Jacob's Ladder for Grade 4 for our older child and liked that book. Do not buy the Jacob's Ladder k-1 grade reading comprehension program book. Same series books for grade 3 or 4 are good and don't have such errors.

Horrible
The ladders cannot be completed based on what the student reads. I have to YouTube a read aloud in order for my students to have the ability to answer the questions. I have all the other books. So far this one is the only one not usable. It should be revised or discontinued.

Inquiry Based Reading Program
The Jacob's Ladder Reading Comprehension Program all aim toward those students who show they have high-ability in reading comprehension. The program is an inquiry based program which leads students from understanding to the ability to critically analyze texts. After completing the lessons, students should have the ability to understand and analyze other passages. The book begins with a Teacher's Guide to the Jacob's Ladder Reading Comprehension Program. It introduces them to the ladders which show the goals and objectives. These include consequences and Implications, Classifications, Literary Elements, Creative Synthesis, Expressing Emotions and Understanding Words. It also helps the teachers with the process of Jacob's Ladder. This includes modeling by the teacher so the students learn the inquiry and feedback system.the Short Stories suggested in this book are: Ella Sarah Gets Dressed; Flotsam; The Red Book; Kitten's First Full Moon, A Sick Day for Amos McGee; Mrs. Katz and Tush; The Hare and the Tortoise; Owen; I Love Saturdays y Domingos; Big Red Lollipop; The Tiny Seed; Noah's Ark; The Boy Who Loved Words; Sylvester and the Magic Pebble; Iggy Peck, Architect; The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing; Make Way for Ducklings; The Polar Express; The Ants and the Grasshopper and Where the Wild Things Are.The poetry included are: Be Glad Your Nose Is On Your Face; The Crocodile; Clouds, The Eagle; Fire in the Windo; The Caterpillar; My Shadow; Wynken, Blynken and Nod; Whether the Weather; I Am Beautiful. This is good material whether in a classroom or homeschooling. Especially for those who are not familial with creating an inquiry based program.I was given this book by LibraryThing in exchange for my honest review.
