Domítíla: A Cinderella Tale from the Mexican Tradition

It is about time that multi-cultural books are being offered for all readers, especially the Cinderella type stories. I loved the book. It is well written, and I recommend it.

Fun version of Cinderella.

I bought this for my niece and she loved it.

A Cinderella story with a twist of hard working and respected Domitila. Her prince begins as a spoiled man, but ends with a much more likable personality.

Jewell Coburn does a great job adapting this Cinderella story to the landscape and culture of Mexico. The story mentions Mexican food and words, and the illustrations depict the Mexican landscape, clothing, and pueblo-style architecture of Mexico. I appreciated the words of wisdom on every page, in Spanish and in English. Coburn does not replicate the Cinderella story exactly, but instead fits the elements of a Cinderella story into her version, making for a more realistic and beautiful story.

This story is one of the Cinderella tales however this one is from Mexico. A young girl goes and cooks for the governor, and the governor is amazed by the taste of the meals that this girl can cook. However Domitila's mother dies and she must return home. The prince wanting to taste the wonderful food again goes out and searches for the woman who can cook a feast out of weeds. Although the governor faces some hardships and dishonest people in the end finds Domitila and marries her. This is a wonderful take off of the classic Cinderella story. I like it because it has Mexican traditions in it and the illustrations are wonderful. This book would be great to use as an introduction to different cultures. If I were to use this in my classroom I would try to get other countries versions of Cinderella so that they children could see even more differences and similarities in the stories.
