Great wood putty. Highly recommended.
Elmer’s wood putty is a wonderful product, I only bought this because it cleans up with water and not chemicals. It’s easy to use you can use your finger or a putty knife, I go back and forth between the two. The sheerness is pretty good I’ll admit depending on where you store it and the temperature of the said storage environment it may feel a little dry but since it’s water soluble if you add water it will help give it better sheerness might take longer to dry but it will stick better. I do wish it was a tad stickier most of the time it sticks perfectly, but I’ve had moments like I was putting a chair back together and one of the dowels for a leg spindle that connected the legs together. Well part of the wood dowel broke leaving half a dowel normally I’d attempt to glue the broken wood that came off and I tried that but I couldn’t get the clamp to stay still, so I threw the broken part away and put wood putty in it’s place and formed the putty into the same shape as the dowel was originally. But then the harden putty just fell off but I think it was too dry, so I’m going to try again since I’m getting more. In one case it worked for a top seat spindle and the the putty adhered and shaped nicely and stayed put, so sometimes it’s the fact that if it’s too putty like it may seem dry and in that case add a tiny amount of water so the shearness returns. Now if it’s a crack in a piece of wood after opening the crack without breaking the wood off and filling in a crack with this putty works well in those cases or if let’s say after gluing a broken wood piece back on and there’s a gap left by the glue I will then I fill it with wood filler. In fact I’ve glued broken wood pieces back together filled the gaps with wood putty then went to sand the area and I noticed that I could no longer see where the crack was, since I applied enough on so this wood filler can really work but it depends is the environment more humid or more dry. I strongly recommend this, also be sure to buy a quart or more you’ll be glad you did.

Good stuff
Works great. Be advised, after you fill an area with this substance you'll want to smooth it off with a damp rag or damp paper towel. If you leave excess and plan to sand it off that will work too, but you will go through a lot of sandpaper ; ) This filler dries super hard - much moreso than typical wood-fill or vinyl spackle. It appears to contain small wood fibers, which may be part of the reason for this. As to staining, I've found that it takes stain well enough for my purpose and no worse than any wood filler. If colormatch is important to you, you may want to purchase a filler that is already tinted. I highly recommend this product.UPDATE: I'm reducing my rating to 4 stars, only because of the poor container. I buy to get the best price, which means I'll use it now and have it on the shelf when I need it. However, the lid doesn't seal well at all. Its not like you have to be careful to fully seal it. It is not possible to achiever a good seal. What you don't use will dry hard as a rock. So, regardless of good bulk prices, I recommend you buy only what you think you'll need. I like the square container (easier to scrape out with a putty knife or taping knife), but Elmer needs to provide one that seals tight.

Good Exterior Wood Filler
I've used this wood filler on several projects with good success. Be sure to apply several coats of paint or varnish/polyurethane, however. I did have trouble using this on a flat surface that was exposed to rain and snow all winter, and found that it expanded a bit and had to be repaired. I think vertical surfaces and those less exposed to long-term water are better suited to this material. For flat surfaces that are an issue, I use Bondo, which is essentially a plastic filler and will not swell when exposed to water. But even with this, I've found that it's important to apply several coats of water-proof primer (spray) followed by 2-3 coats of acrylic paint.

Can't find any better wood filler.
Elmer's is getting harder to find . I'm a wood butcher (woodworker), and have tried may other products and find I like Elmer's the best. Thank goodness I can still find Elmer's on Amazon.

not great
purchased for plugging carpenter bee holes in a non-visable area from the outside.wish I had spent a few more bucks on something a little better. container it came in does not seal, had to dump it into a plastic container of my own. dries to a somewhat soft, chalky consistency and not hard and wood like the way other wood fillers do.for anything that will be seen, this is not a good solution. for plugging holes on a surface to be painted later I guess it could work.but, no reason not to spend a few more bucks on a something nicer.

The ONLY Wood Filler I Ever Use
This product is excellent and easy to use. I've been using it for 3 years and never had problems applying it, sanding it, or even staining over it. Its consistency is fine, but if you want to add a little water to make it spread easier, you can easily do so. Best of all, you need not have to use an additional chemical to make it harden and dry. Its only downfall is its lid. The sealing lips could have been made bigger to ensure better sealing. Even when the lid is tight on, a dry crust can form on the bottom of the lid or along the top edges. Just be sure to put the lid on immediately as it can dry out quickly. Before putting on the lid, make sure the crevices on the bottom of the lid and the lips around the top of the container are clean and free of bits of the substance. Hence, unless you use it in large quantities and very often, it is best that you buy more smaller containers of it rather than fewer large containers. Best of all, it is not like PLAY DOUGH, but more like a moister substance.
