A Savory Protein Bar, FINALLY!
Bottom line up front: YUM. FINALLY. YAY.Y'all, I'm in my mid-30s and have finally accepted that I just don't like sweet foods all that much. A little piece of chocolate after dinner? Great. A glass of (slightly watered-down) lemonade? Yes, please. And fruit? Fruit for daaaaaaaays. But yet another protein powder shake? No thanks. a chocolate-and-peanut-butter-packed-caramel-drizzled protein bar? Blech. Straight sugar is NOT a meal, people. Too much sugar all at once with my protein, and then that lingering "protein" taste (you know what I mean) for hours on end. And one can only eat so many unshelled nuts before getting bored. Also, with a colleague allergic to tree nuts, I can't exactly dig into my bag of pistachios. So I went on the hunt for savory protein bars, which... WAY tougher than I thought it would be. Even bars that touted themselves as "savory" had a bunch of reviews calling them "too sweet" and "like dessert." I usually don't even like dessert FOR dessert, let alone in a protein bar, so when I came across Afar bars and saw words like "garam masala" and "matcha," I was intrigued. Price almost kept me from ordering, but when you're like one of six Americans who doesn't really dig sugar, you just kinda go for it.And I'm SUPER glad I did. These things are GAME changers. The garam masala bar is spicy in all the right ways and reminds me of legit dinner-time Indian food. The lingering flavor actually tastes like something, rather than the ubiquitous "sweet," and I just can't get over how happy that makes me.*CONS*:- A bit crumbly (not Nature Valley-crumbly, but just keep an eye on it.)- Could use just a taaaaad less salt (the flavor is so good, it doesn't need it. 290mg/13% daily in the GM bar. Not a deal breaker for me!)- Price is kinda high (variety pack: $27.99/8 bars, or $3.49 a bar)*PROS*:- Seriously savory! For real this time!- Compact. A lot of power packed into a small package. And here's where the crumbly-ness can be a good thing: there's so much flavor, you can eat little bits at a time and feel like you're getting a mouthful.- Filling. 10g protein and 16g carbs, so it's going to hit the spot but you're not going to feel bloated and gassy afterwards (another one of my major gripes with traditional protein bars and shakes).*FINAL THOUGHTS*I'm not going to be able to eat these as often as I'd like because of cost, but I hope that the savory protein bar catches on and the company is able to lower prices a bit. In the meantime, I'm off to the Afar website to see what sort of "subscribe and save" options they offer. I'd love to keep my pantry stocked with these bad boys!NOTE: these DO contain soy and almonds and are processed in a facility that may have trace of peanuts, milk, eggs, wheat, and sesame. However, my colleague who's allergic and highly-sensitive to tree nuts couldn't tell I was eating these from about 10 feet away. Probably worth having the conversation if you're in an environment with tree nut/peanut allergies.

Love the low sugar content
I like the flavor & crispy texture. It is very hard to find a bar like this that is low in sugar having no sugar substitute. However at $3.49/bar, this is the most expensive bar I have ever bought. The bar itself fulfills all my wants, but the price may prevent me from future purchases.

Flavor could be better
I was glad to find a savory flavored meal bar. They're pretty hard to find. The flavors were OK, but seemed a little stale. Not sure if I will buy them again

Fills a gap in the market, tastes okay
I eat a lot of bars because I am on the go a lot, need to eat many small meals/snacks per day, and have dietary restrictions that mean I can’t just grab a quick lunch from a vendor when I’m out and about. I get tired of sweet bars, and so these savory protein bars fill a real need.So the idea is brilliant. The execution is only okay.As others have mentioned, the bars are very crumbly. I didn’t think I’d mind too much, but here are some places I have eaten these bars: while listening to a talk at a work conference (awkward and not too professional to be picking pieces of food off myself); in the car (unsafe to pick all the pieces of food off myself/the floor). The flavors are also only okay. I’ve eaten them all but probably the only flavor I would buy again is the Mexican Chili-Lime. I may buy again but they probably won’t be in heavy rotation.

Find the flavors that work for you
We do a lot of trips which require some serious walking. Usually I have to keep a few snacks in my purse in case we get delayed in getting to our next meal during our travels. I was honestly getting tired of sweet granola bars and protein bars. For me, the are the perfect option. I'm glad I got the sampler pack, because each flavor is pretty unique and may not suit everyone's tastes. My preferences are (in this order)": bruschetta, chili lime, masala, and miso. The actual taste of the miso isn't too bad, but for the the crunchy texture with the miso flavor was just not it.I will say that I found the chili lime to be fairly spicy. Probably around/slightly under sriracha. That's fine for me, but my husband has zero tolerance and this was way above his comfort level. These are an excellent snack for folks like me, who get hangry easily and need a quick fix to get back on track.

Some of the best protein bars I've ever had
Got the box with 4 different flavors and a box of the American Everything Bagel and they were all phenomenal! Every bar tastes exactly as advertised! Favorites were the American Everything Bagel followed by Indian Masala tied with the Italian Bruschetta, but the Mexican Chili Lime and Japanese Miso came very close. You can definitely taste the love and care that went into each of the recipes. Good size for each one too, not too big and not too small, just enough for a snack. Overall texture reminds me of a less sticky rice crispy treat and some of them have nuts for a nice little crunch. If you're looking for an alternative to the sweet protein bars, these are a must try!

Tasteless and bland
like a rice crispies treat if you made it with a little salt and no marshmallows or butter. The 4 flavors range between bland and almost tasteless while others are almost gross. Not a good thing. Save your money. I was really hoping for something good. Like the savory kind bars used to be. Too bad.

FINALLY! I finally found an amazing savory energy bar!
First off... wow! The Indian masala blew my socks off! These bars are amazing! I have been searching for a savory energy bar for a few years, and I'm so happy I stumbled upon these. I swear no one wants to make savory energy bars, but sweet energy bars make me feel super sick when I'm hungry. The thought of eating a peanut butter or chocolate energy bar when I'm super hungry makes me nauseous, so these savory bars are a godsend for me!Please keep making these 🙏I'll keep buying them!Oh, and I love the packaging you guys ship them in. Just gives off high quality vibes.
