Better gut in a few days
My mother purchased this book (and two others) for me following my diagnosis of Crohn's disease. The other two books told me what to expect and various treatment options, but neither gave me insight into what I could eat. The GI already had me doing a "low-residue" diet, which was fairly bland and did not help much as I was trying to suppress a flare. This was the last of the three books I've read. So many books for Crohn's diets are written by people who have some knowledge and really suck at writing. Scala (the author) has a lot of nutritional knowledge and writes proficiently. I can refer to this book painlessly if I have any questions about what I should and shouldn't eat.I will say that there are a few times when he says, "We'll talk more about that later," which is a bit annoying, but if you're going to read the whole book anyways, it doesn't make a difference. The information is clear, concise, and very helpful. He looks at what actually causes inflammation in the diet and carefully parses good foods from bad using his nutritionist knowledge.I've been eating this diet and found it helped out within a few days. It's a little more expensive because I eat a lot of fish, but produce is fairly cheap, so I don't complain too much. I've also made a few tiny adjustments to make the diet more "do-able" for me (I don't do well with beans, even after multiple soaks/rinses). I highly recommend this quick-reading, info-packed book.

Still relevant in 2015.
For folks who struggle with fussy tummies this simple to understand book is a great help. Even though it is copyrighted in 1990 it is still relevant today in 2015. I highly recommend it as someone who has suffered in this fashion for 47 years. The list of trigger foods is the most helpful. Gastroenterologists do not provide this kind of in depth help.

Knowledge is power
After nine months of G.I. distress this book has helped me understand my "inner workings" and why things happen that aren't suppose to happen! A simple visit to the doctor isn't going to answer all the questions you didn't know you had until you read this book.

not for me
This is a book i ordered thinking it would help with my current digestion issues but it wasn't for me, i just didn't find in it the information i thought it may have, but it was in a easy to read format and easy to understand.

Do NOT think this book will tell you anything about IBD!
Dr. Scala is well known as an arthritis expert and in my opinion, he should have stayed in that arena. I have never read a book referring to Inflammatory Bowel Disease in its title that said less about the disease! This is basically a nutrition book, which is fine, but why market it as something specific about colitis and Crohn's? This seems purposely misleading to me and the blasé attitude toward sufferers of these diseases does not induce a close read of the material. Not necessary to purchase.

Extremely helpful, logical book for anyone with gut problems
I have ordered this book 3 times - for myself, for my MIL, and for a friend. We all agree it's easy to read; has good, practical information; offers flexibility to try some food you love in small amounts or rarely instead of a rigid NEVER again! We find this book easy to use for quick reference, too. The information in the book has made all of our lives better as we've taken many of the suggestions to modify our diets or the way we cook some foods. If you have Crohn's, IBS, or other bothersome gut problems, I think this is the most useful book to have on your bookshelf. This is the book I return to repeatedly.

The material was presented in a reasionable way.
The material is presented in a way that lets the reader feel like the gut problem can be managed. The author does not say "this or that" is the only way, but presents the case for a holistice approach. I use the book as a refrence tool for my sely and other newl diognosed IBD people.

Great book
I have UC and found this book to be very helpful. It addresses an often neglected way of dealing with IBD- diet. It is full of useful and easy to read information. Highly recommended.

This book didn't disappoint - it's quite 'science-heavy'
Really interesting. I have bowel disease and am aware of the effect of diet on inflammatory conditions. This book didn't disappoint - it's quite 'science-heavy', but that's what I really liked about it. It was full of facts, not the usual format of hotch-potch ideas and terrible recipes. It explains how your body processes nutrients (or in the case of people with IBD, how they don't) and I found a lot of the information very useful.
