An excellent guide to leadership at a time of change.
Anyone who has read Stephen Tierney's blog at Leading Learner or who follows his writing on Twitter will be aware of his warmth and passion for education. This comes across strongly in this wonderful book which also carries the message that we have a strong moral imperative to make education excellence for all students - especially school leaders at every level. This book combines personal anecdotes alongside advice and guidance on developing as a leader and on carrying out that leadership in a way that means there is real change. This is a very timely book as the education system goes through endless changes driven by politicians at Westminster. It is a reminder that what schools need are not "Superheads" parachuted in by academy chains but dedicated professionals who care deeply about their role and about their school.

This book made me want to read about Work while not at work. Thoughtful, full of energy and easy to read.

So 2010...
This book is now very dated. As Stephen points out the use of social media, online research papers and access to professional research from NPQ courses are more up to date. Save your money.

Reflections and ideas for school leaders
Great brain food! Stephen takes us through both experiences through Headship and his critique of the current educational landscape. Recommended!

Useful reflections...
For me too much god and war analogies, but nevertheless honest and heart felt reflections on education and leadership today.
