EXCELLENT field guide for moths!
I've become a bit of a moth maniac over the last year and have spent countless hours trying to identify moths by looking at photos on various websites and waiting for people to respond to my questions. I found out about this new field guide and purchased it immediately. I was a little worried that my hopes might be too high, but there was no need to worry. This is an excellent field guide, with clear photos, nice explanations, good range maps, etc. If you're interested in moths, this is the guide for you!

An informative work of art!
Beautiful work! I live in the Pacific Northwest and have used the new guide to the northeast as an additional aid in identifying our local species. There is range overlap for a few species and there is also useful info about moth families and genera. I loved that book so much, I had to have the southeastern guide. It too is an incredible work of art and very informative. Great price for such a tome! It's a "must have" for moth lovers. I hope the northwestern U.S. is next in the series!

Very Comprehensive!
I've just received this field guide and begun to look through it so this may not be my final review. It's obvious that it is very comprehensive and expertly done. However, I am mildly disappointed that all species pictured are photographed in their natural resting positions, instead of being pinned and spread. The hindwings of many moths are not visible, and this would have made identification somewhat easier - especially among groups of closely related and very similar appearing species.

best moth book out there
Leckie and Beadle did an awesome job with their books. I started out in the Northeastern version and was very happy to discover after moving to NC that they have a Southeastern ID book too. While there are far too many moths to cover in any one book, Leckie and Beadle do a good job of covering a good portion of them. I'm also happy they have included better identification characteristics with some of the easily confused moths such as the Grape Leaffolder and the White-headed Grape Leaffolder as size and coloration varies so much they can look exactly alike. The southern book includes the critical description of the solid white patch on the underside of the abdomen on the Grape Leaffolder that the White-headed Grape Leaffolder does not have, which is really the only way to accurately identify these species. And they may have solved the bulging problem that plagued the early volumes of the northeastern version. Users of this volume will know what I mean everyone else can ignore that comment and hopefully they have fixed it with later publications.

Must have book on moths.
Excellent book. My husband is finding moths that are local to us, including at least one that was not in the northeastern guide. Great photos, range maps, updated information, including more info on host plants. Very useful and pleasing book.

this series is great for anyone interested is nature or the outdoors. i like the fact that you are not looking at organisms that do not live in the region and thus wasting your time. for anyone interested in nature this would be a great addition to their library.
