York Waits on the Spanish Armada
In 1988 the York Waits recorded this concept album to celebrate the four hundredth anniversary of the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588.This is a fabulous project that is an anthology of popular music during the reign of Elizabeth I. It includes pieces that were popular in the 16th and 17th Centuries in England. The programme begins with an atmospheric news narration of Queen Elizabeth visiting the troops at Tilsbury and the entertainment there. This is taken from words by Thomas Deloney 1588. There are words and drum that set the scene for what is to come next. Then the disc continues with a selection of pieces by various sources. There is the Spanish Pavan as arranged by Praetorius 1612. A piece that was already popular at the time of the Spanish Armada. And there is an Italian Galliard, a piece called Crimson Velvet, another three pieces called La Doune Cella, La shy Myze, and La bounette all ascribed to Anon. There are other pieces from English traditional source with no known composer. This recording is a delight. It has great atmosphere and interest. And the York Waits offer us a very engaging programme. They play on a variety of instruments such as Cornett, Shawm, bagpipes, tabor, recorders, cittern, lute, sackbut, hurdy gurdy, and alto flute. Also on this recording is the magnificent Christopher Wilson on Lute,The York Waits revived the tradition of the York City band. They specialise in playing popular music from the period 1450-1650 on copies of original instruments. Here they are on top form with their performance. The current line up of the York Waits represent the sound of the original Waits of York that were performing even at the time of the Spanish Armada. This release is excellent and the digital sound by Saydisc records is very good.I highly recommend this recording to anyone interested the history of England, the Elizabethan era Folk music, Classical music or music of that period.
