Rory Gallagher - "One of the best blues guitarist ever"!! This is "The" Definitive Collection of Rory at his best! (2 Disc DVD)!
Rory Gallagher was a lengenday electric guitarist & singer from Ireland. He could play excellent blues guitar, slide guitar, and just the guitar in general. He was born in 1948, and died in 1995, following complications from a liver transplant. This dvd is a very through, collection of Rory and his bands, performing at their very best, from 1975 through 1994. Rory's bands contained an electric bass player, a drummer, & sometimes a keyboardist. You get 2 disc, as follows: (All performances are from the Montreaux Jazz Festival). Some of these songs were written by legendary bluesmen, such as Muddy Waters, Son House & Others. This is an excellent Blues Rock Concert & Performances!!!!Disc 1: (On this disc, Rory does the famous "duck walk", that Chuck Berry made famous. After 36 years I get it
In 1975 a person that I reacquainted with told me about Rory Gallagher. I had a good stereo system and he wanted to bring over on of the albums he had of Rory. We put it on and the acquaintence was very pleased of the sound and I thought it somewhat good but was really into prog rock and the outlandish music scene of the time i.e Yes, ELP, King Crimson etc., so I was not enthralled with the record.I for some reason started reading up on Rory with now being older and a musician of many years myself. After going back and forth to buy the Irish tour or this, I bought the Montreaux set (will probably buy the Irish Tour now as a result). I liked and could easily listen to and watch all of this. Many turns and twists in this guys' songs for sure. He handled the guitar and controlled it. It was blues with about everything else added through this entire performance. It is funny that he shows different levels of maturity in playing anywhere within the twenty years represented here. Not that one level was higher than another but that they were just different. In the 94 concert, he seemed to use the power chord playing more with less fills in between but no less superb than the 75 concert that showed real prowess with a much more lead style emphasis. He was very good on acoustic/resonator guitars and really enjoyed "Out on the Western Plain" as everyone in the audience did also. Really good suprise with Bela Fleck on banjo playing with him.The band in general were very good in all phases of the 20 year history. The harmonica player in later years really adds to his music.I still cant believe that he puts on the 94 show and then passes away a year later. He must have been sick or had knowledge of it in the 94 concert. If so he did not hold back maybe wishing he had more time. Possibly a renewed fire that would be put out for good a short time later.Yep, after 36 years I get it..........like Jimi said after being asked what it is like being the best guitarist on the planet....."I dont know, go ask Rory Gallagher" (circa 1969).

Great music!
No surprise that the video of the early concerts in this collection is somewhat blurry, but the audio is fantastic. Rory Gallagher was amazing, and the performances on this DVD are off the charts! If you like Humble Pie, 10 Years After, Cream, Mountain, the Allman Brothers, then you'll like this. A lot.

Rory

Rory at his best!
This is a great collection of a sadly deceased and now somewhat forgotten rock/blues guitarist from Ireland. Unassuming in his dress (jeans and a checkered shirt were his favorite stage clothes), he was reputed to be quiet off the stage but as these Montreux recordings from 3 different decades show, he was a lively and very generous performer, with immense crowd appeal. It's very interesting to see the progression of his guitar playing style through the concerts here, and the sight and sound of him rocking the stage with that old battered Stratocaster of his is something unforgettable for those who saw him play live. I did once, in the early 80's, and this DVD serves to remind me why to this day, I firmly believe he was the BEST rock and blues guitarist that I ever saw live in my life (never saw Clapton, Hendrix, Stevie Ray though). He is sadly missed, but these live recordings are a great legacy to the powerful performer that he always was. Thanks for the memories, Rory!!

Searing blues axe master
Some artists just seem to fall through the cracks. I am a fan of the sixties/seventies guitar masters, Hendrix, Allman, Clapton, Stevie, Carlos et al. I suppose because he didn't have "a hit", in commercial terms, I was unaware of the sheer genius of one Rory Gallagher. Until I purchased this DVD. What a player! What a freakin' band! If you are even a mild afficianado of guitar driven blues - you will be TOASTED by this DVD. I mean thrown against the wall impressed. Buy it - just buy it and thank your lucky stars this Irish genius has been captured in all his fret-genius on tape, long after his premature death. Five hours of brilliance. Not a throw-away song in the bunch. Incredidible production considering the times. With today's dearth of quality musicians - what an absolute treat to unearth this under-appreciated axe master. Just buy it dammit!
