Not what I had hoped they were
I will not blame anyone but myself for my dissatisfaction with these DVDs. I had hoped they would be the Chaucer plays but with modernized and understandable English. Unfortunately, they are modern stories that claim to be based on the Chaucer tales. Frankly, I found it difficult to apprehend much similarity, let alone any basis in the original tales. Perhaps it is because I read the tales many years ago--I'm not sure. However, let this be a warning: if you hunger for Chaucer tales, and if you are anything like me, you will not be satisfied with these. One the good side (hence the two stars): the stories are pretty good for what they are, and Keeley Hawes is wonderful, of course. I wish I had read the description more carefully.

Time different-people the same
Tales of people contemporary are based on a classic work published centuries ago. Also clothes and appliances had changed dramatically upon centuries, a human nature is still the same.

Canterbury Tales With A Modern Twist
I missed a few episodes of these quality dramas first time round on BBC TV some years ago and decidedto buy the DVD 2 Disc set from a seller here on Amazon. What we have are six, one hour long dramas adapted for our times, but based on the original tales thatwere written by the 14th century writer Geoffrey Chaucer.Of the six stories all played by a top cast of actors, I found that "The Pardoners Tale" was a favouritewith Jonny Lee Miller playing Arty a Down and Out, who along with his two pals comes to a sticky end.Another favourite was "The Wife of Bath"with Julie Walters and Paul Nicholls. Julie plays a woman whois still looking for Mr Right even after going through several divorces. This was especially well acted withJulie Walters being awarded a BAFTA for Best Actress. All in all a very enjoyable series of dramas with good acting and characterisation.BBC Production 2004Subtitles in EnglishRunning Time approx 360 minutes

A modern interpretation of the Canterbury Tales
A wonderful modern interpretation of Chauce's Canterbury Tales. Although quite old the standard of acting is good.

It is NOT Chaucer
Whatever the producers were trying to do, it is not Chaucer. The actors may be extremely talented, but a version which does not work, is simply a failure. A waste of the purchase price ...
