Away from Home: Quilts Inspired by the Lowell Factory Girls

Make this Quilt. It is gorgeous!
The photographs are of good quality. The book gives instructions; but, the instructions could have been more detailed. I find myself asking questions, (of my quilting friends and experts at Stroebel's Sewing Center), to clarify points in the book. It is a massive undertaking; but, it is well worth the effort to sew this quilt.I should note here, I am a beginner in quilting, so many of the questions I need to ask, a seasoned quilter may already know. :)I reccommend quilters buy this book.

A Wonderful History Lesson
I found this book to be a valuable lesson regarding the lives of women in the work force in the early 1800. The writings about the Mill Girls is taken from diaries and letters that some women actually wrote. They saved their money and sent it home to help their own families. America's Industrial Revolution began in New England in these Mills. Judie Rothermel and Faye Burgos did a fabulous job with designing the "Reproduction Fabric" and I am inspired by the patterns and have "Holiday Spirit" ready to applique. Thank you Nancy and Oliver Rink for this great book. Sincerely, Annie

Interesting bit of history
I purchased this book as a part of a quilt history group. The stories of the girls are intriguing glimpses of the way the factories treated their workforce. The patterns appear to be historically accurate and the patterns are well drawn.

Disappointing.
This book is a shameless use of fascinating history to sell modern reproduction fabrics. If I had wanted a book of projects using Marcus fabrics, I would have gone to the quilt fabric store. Somehow, I was expecting historic quilts made by or about the Lowell factory girls. Instead, I got a book of nicely made quilts with illustrations, especially the daguerreotypes, that are too small to see.

Love this book. I started the center block and haven't had time to work on it all summer. Will get back to it this fall.
