It might make sense that a trap should be placed right next to a carpenter bee nest but this can make the trap less effective. Carpenter bees are quite territorial and if you place a trap next to an existing nest, the resident bee will do its best to chase off all other bees. The most effective practice is to plug up existing nests and place the trap above them. When the nests are plugged, the carpenter bees will start looking for a new home and your trap will be prime real estate. For general placement, corners and peaks of structures tend to work best. As well, locating traps in warm, sunny areas works better than cool, shaded places. Remember to be patient, at first it can take a few days for the carpenter bees to find the trap.
