Devious Dreams: Reimagining David Lynch's Mulholland Drive
A**A
Each mystery is persuasively addressed
This book has three main sections, each of which is excellent: 1) a 20-page backstory of Mulholland Drive's inspiring transformation from TV show to feature film; 2) a 90-page scene-by-scene and act-by-act analysis of the entire film and its many mysteries; 3) 50 pages of real-time interviews with five cast members, including Watts, Harring, and Theroux. Each section left me with an even deeper appreciation of the film (MD), the filmmaker (Lynch), and the writer (Thorne) than I'd already had (high praise). Notable: the book is heavily researched but never weighed down; it's fun to read, and Thorne pulls no punches when agreeing and disagreeing with other scholars. Highly recommended for fans of the film, for those perplexed by the film, for fans of what film can do and be at its best, and (obviously) for fans of John Thorne and David Lynch. Read it and enjoy.

Tremendous
This is the second Amazon review I've ever written. The first one was for Thorne's "Ominous Whoosh", this is for Thorne's next book. I've seen Mulholland Drive at least ten time since it came out and have read plenty about, yet the book highlights details and delivers insights that make me watch the movie again as soon as I hit submit for this review.
