Compelling, gripping tail of survival
Pretty amazing account of the sole survivor of a massively damaged boat finding the resources to survive and sail to a populated. Island. Also a story of tragically lost love that sometimes overwhelms the survival narrative but very good all around.

Better/different than the movie.
Like many, I probably did this backwards ie: saw the movie, read the book. But I think if I had done it the other way, I would have been more disappointed with the movie. This way, it was just an appetizer for the main course. I realize that to externalize Tami’s internal drama for a movie, more ‘devices’ had to be used, ie: The Voice became more synonymous with Richard’s ‘presence’ in the movie. The movie left a Sixth Sense taste in my mouth which I didn’t like bc Tami’s situation alone was dramatic enough. No other “tricks” were needed IMHO. Small details were embellished for the movie but one that didn’t seem at all necessary was Tami’s vegetarianism (movie only). Why? It was hammered in at the first meeting of Tami & Richard & then again when contemplating survival later. In the book she didn’t HAVE to kill fish to survive (ie: Tom Hanks in Castaway) bc she had enough food on board to make it to Hawaii. Seemed overly dramatic and formulaic when the truth was plenty. She also sewed up her own scalp in the movie. Again, too much. After reading the book I thought Shailene Woodley waaaay overplayed Tami, who reads in the book to be a very complex, VERY YOUNG woman thrown into extraordinary circumstances. Shailene & the script turned her into a ‘super-survivor’: spearing fish to eat raw & survive, enduring the pain of sewing up flesh, etc & glossed over the more subtle (more human) buckets of self doubt and soul searching that she wrestled with during her 41 days adrift.Glad I read the book. The movie can stay on the shelf.

Captivating true story
Excellent book about a tragic event. The author did a great job writing about her survival story while weaving in past events which made you understand her.

MORAL: Stay out of storms at Sea
I recently saw the movie and thought I would read the book. The movie is quite well done and covers clandestinely one of the main points brought out early in the book. Generally I enjoyed both. Clearly, the book gives more detail and made the story quite interesting. The movie is a little more sensationalized but not as much time could be spent on the actual decisions made of where to go after the catastrophe and small little decisions that saved her life. Additionally, the movie attempts to sensationalize the hunger aspect on the sea whereas the book seems to say there were provisions that made the rescue not an episode in starvation.Overall a great retelling of a catastrophe that is worth the read.

The proper skill set can save your life.
Stunning story. When I lived in Mission Beach, in the 1970s, there were/are girls who looked like Tami everywhere. As I began reading, I was amazed by her depth of knowledge, her experience, and her courage. It would have been easy to mistake her for another beach blond. I had family members who fished tuna and albacore and didn't return until they had a full catch. This was before GPS so the use of the sextant and constellations was critical. Her story taught me a whole new vocabulary. The loss of her fiance was heartbreaking but her dialogue with her Voice was was inspirational. I seem to read about these super human stories like the Sydney to Hobart race and the Everest disaster, absolutely captivated by how individuals venture out beyond what is safe. I stand in awe.

Gripping
It’s been a while since I read a book in one setting but I quite literally couldn’t put this down. My heart is still aching as I writing this but I’m so happy Tami survived and got another chance at love.

A wonderful read
Great book, looking forward to seeing the movie! Having sailed a few times on a Cat made it more interesting too. Gave enough detail to give the reader a good background without overdoing it. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Staying alive is up to you!
Great fast moving story of a young woman's struggle to stay alive in the face of adversity. Her motto of never give up and her faith in God helped her survive 41 days alone at sea.

Remarkable Courage!
A wonderful story. I recommend seeing the movie first, because there is much detail in the book which doesn’t appear in the movie, and you will be disappointed.

A great read ! Gripping !
Saw that this was due to come out as a film, and read the review. Good a reason as any to read the book : I prefer to read the book before seeing the film. I loved the book, it was absolutely gripping from the start, a tale of love, of course, and loss. Even though I knew the tale, because it’s a true story, I so wished that the ending was different.... I would definitely recommend, a great read.
