During a big race, Mark "High Gear" Sherrod skids into a fiery collision that kills his ace mechanic, Ed Evans. Racked with guilt, Mark promises to fulfill Ed's dying wish - to send his son Jimmy to an expensive military academy. Counting on future race winnings to pay the high tuition, Mark is devastated when he discovers that the trauma of the crash has robbed him of his "racing nerve." Forced to drive a cab to earn a living, the ex-racing star tries to keep his new line of work a secret from Jimmy, as the bills keep piling up. The promise of fame and fortune constantly beckons High Gear to return to the dangerous world of the asphalt track, if he can only summon the courage.

hgih gear-old movie
This is a great race car movie. I would'nt have thought that Mickie Rooney could pull off this part but he is so young in the movie that it works. It's a black and white movie but still a must have for race fans.

Fast paced...
Great early racing footage.Silly story, but remember when it was made.Love the high-speed driving with the Packard ambulance... THAT had to be a handful !!!
