This a good plane for the money
Unlike some reviewers, the plane i have been sent is excellent. The steel body was very well honed and the blade is fractionally wider than the plane body which is exactly what you want to see.Straight out of the box without sharpening the blade, I adjusted the blade setting and cleaned a rebate out on a door frame and it worked perfectly well.Well worth the money...buy one....you can pay a lot more for a tool like this elsewhere

Not for fine woodworking
I'm sure a lot of woodworkers will be looking at this option. I've tried to provide as many pics as I can to help you - it's the only reason for this review as I was in this position and took a chance. Most importantly my plane works hence 4 stars. It really is sufficient to take some quite thin cuts with the right sharpening. It has square sides to sole and well machined - not precision machined but better than a lot of other reviews (clearly I was lucky or they've inproved recently). It is better in squareness side to sole but less so front to back - This doesn't affect performance for my needs, I wouldn't try to correct it front to back as I'm pretty happy with how square it is. Another flaw in the machining is that unless using the provided shims, the mouth is not wide enough for the blade to protrude far enough for an actual cut! A design flaw is that it clogs terribly, especially if planing something painted. This is due to the frog being very 'blunt' and thick at the end and same for the inside of the plane which could do with a slight angle on it. The blade is quite rough out of the box but sharpened up well enough for me. I do think some very simple machining inside would solve these problems really quickly and so a bit annoying they left it the way it is at this price. I'm tempted to have a go with a file but should probably get it onto a mill to finish it properly.

The plane was very badly machined .
As the sole of the plane was machined incorrectly I was unable to set the plane for any kind of fine planing. the blade seemed to be offset in its fixing position. No amount of sharpening or adjusting would make the plane usable, so its in my metal recycling bin for the next time I visit the local scrap dealer.

Appalling quality.
The tool. The machining quality and control on this plane is so bad the tool is utterly useless. The bed that the blade sits on isn’t machined square to the base of the tool body. This leaves the blade sitting out of square and incapable of cutting evenly across the blade width. It’s deep on one side and shallow on the other. This means the plane is never going to cut a flat surface that’s true to square. The sole reason for using a plane in the first place. The general machining is of a low standard too, meaning the tool has rough areas and sharp edges all over. The blade.I was expecting the blade to need a clean up and sharpen before using it, but this one looks like it’s been ground on the back edge too. That’s left the blade dull and in need of more sharpening than I’m set up to do.Overall impression.Don’t bother, especially for this price!Whilst it does come with a few spares, in an ok presentation box and bagged with plenty of oil protecting it, it’s simply not worth it. It’s so bad I’m sending it back for a refund and will look elsewhere for a bullnose plane. It’s so bad I’ll never buy anything from Faithfull again.See the photos for how bad this really is.

good value
generally well made, sole and sides accurately machined so no modifications needed. The rotating wheel that adjusts the depth of the blade did not rotate evenly in the blade slot making adjustment stiff. After slight widening of the slot with a small file the wheel now rotates as it should allowing a smooth fine adjustment of the blade. Despite this minor adjustment, the plane is good value for money.

Very poor quality.
Where to start... body of plane neither square nor flat. Not enough clearance in the throat to allow blade to protrude to make a cut (shims are provided so obviously a design fault). Blade material really soft, once you get a decent edge on it and fettle it square enough to give a cut, edge doesn't last even on soft woods. I have spent around four hours grinding, milling and re-tempering things from straight out of the box to where I can use this tool for its intended purpose. That said, for £71 expectations were not very high anyway.UPDATE:-Have used this quite extensively since purchase and have found it to perform adequately for my needs. a wee bit of tlc has gone a long way. Will need a new blade soon, not sure if replacements are available but will find out.

Not the same quality as the pictured item
Poor quality casting, misaligned lever, badly specified blade that is a full 5mm wider than the body.Box doesn't resemble the quality of the one in the picture, lever not polished like in the picture, entire thing looks like a poor knock-off of a decent tool.Didn't even make it out of the bag.

: ) Retour!
