Supergirl: Being Super
C**Y
The Book Has a Timeless Innocence Not Unlike "Superman: For All Seasons"
Ms. Tamaki sets us in a "Friday Night Lights" community, that kind of apotheosis of Americana, a dream vision of flyover country, and quite simply Joelle Jones is the worthiest exclusive find DC, the publisher, has netted in a while. Her Supergirl is specific. While well-built, the sensulaity is not over-sold. To be frank, I would have loved the plot to drop off even more, as in "For All Seasons," in which the story in threadbare, hanging its narrative hat, first and foremost, in a sense of place ... let's see that more in superhero fare, so the slugfests drop away, consigned to the tedium they half the time embody.

Good solid story.
It's disappointing that this isn't in real continuity, but is just a side story. Some aspects are a little nonsensical, but overall it's a nice character story of a character coming of age. Not perfect. Far from it. But pretty good.

A teenage Kara who is not yet a hero. Good retelling
What if Kara was found by a farm couple and it her cousin. Itās a good retelling and a much more complex real Kara. Nice to have a Complete stand-alone story too.

My daughter loves this comic!
I got this for my daughter for Christmas and she loved it and has already read the whole book. It was actually thicker and more sturdy than I expected and also had more pages then I expected. It was a good buy and my daughter was super happy to get it.

More adult than I thought.
It was way more adult than I thought it would be. The age range started st 10 but I think more like 13.

For this generation
I'll be honest, while this Supergirl is a better variant than the new 52 version, it wasn't for me. I've always loved Supergirl, whose post of a DC triumvirate of heroes I've always liked, wonder woman, Supergirl and zatanna. But this just went too far off the reservation. I felt the other Kryptonian was contrived and didn't fit the story that well. This is Supergirl for a new generation.

Let There Be Light
I have never been especially keen on the modern tendency to make superheroes darker and darker. I started with Golden Age, (to mid-1950's), Superman and followed him through the Silver Age, (around 1970). Checking back in now everyone seems to be tormented and a touch psychotic. That's why this Supergirl reboot was fun. (This is not part of the "DC Universe Rebirth" or "the New 52"; I think it's a sort of a standalone Supergirl alternate series, but that could be wrong.)It's almost all origin story and setup, but from a sixteen year old girl's vantage point. NO SPOILERS, but we learn how Kara ended up on Earth and we get to see her awaken into her potential. She's angsty and there's some serious drama, but it all fits into her new frame. I appreciated the light touch with her adoptive parents, the hints about Krypton, and the fact that Kara got to have a funny, kick-butt friend, (who steals every scene she's in), to help her become super. There's violence and loss and action and self-doubt and everything else you might expect from a super-powered teen coming of age story, but it all seemed to be directed to an authentic and hopefully even upbeat take on Supergirl. You won't, however, know that for sure from this volume. It's long, but it doesn't kick in to phase two until the last few pages. It ends, as Professor Jones said about young Indiana, just when it was about to get interesting. But that's the nature of origin stories. It was entertaining, (and the art is crisp, colorful, expressive, and dynamic), and it showed promise. To me, there's generic standard issue teen angst for YA readers, and then there's the real deal that actually sometimes feels true and important. You get some of that here, and there are strong hints that Tamaki and Jones were destined to be the team to pull this off. In any event, I'll be happy to see where this new Supergirl goes.(Please note that I received a free advance will-self-destruct-in-x-days Adobe Digital copy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

Loved this story! By far one of my favourite Supergirl's I've read so far. I just wished it was longer as you really connect with the characters in this one and truly feel for Supergirl.

Girly coming-of-age
Beautiful coming-of-age story. At times too predictable, but still an engaging tale.
