Oceanic Histories (Cambridge Oceanic Histories)

Reimagining connections between human and non-human history.
This collection of authors produced a fascinating book about the world ocean, giving a perspective of global and transnational history. Oceanic Histories take an alternative approach to look at world history from longer historical genealogies of the oceans and seas whose histories are told from the “below.” The surface of each oceanic basin, massive or smaller, differs from one another historically, geologically, and physically. Distinct characteristics that are related to human, non-human, and physical histories predetermine the length and the richness of oceanic genealogies. Those can be stretched back in times to centuries or even thousand years as in case of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. In contrast, the chronologies of the Antarctic and Southern Oceans are relatively new and do not count more than a few centuries. Although, the “recent” history of the polar waters draws more attention now in both scientific and diplomatic circles due to contemporary issues such as the physical history of climate change, the acceleration of ice loss, and acidificationThis volume will be of great enjoyment for a wide range of readers interested in micro and macro history. Specialists in international relations and diplomatic studies will recognize this book as an excellent resource for a deeper understanding of the evolution of inter-state relations and how they are related to diplomatic negotiations.
