Powerful motor, but too light to stay put
I have taken pottery classes and have been throwing on a wheel for a few years. While I am no craftsman, I am fairly capable and one of my favorite things to throw are tiny bowls and cups. So this wee wheel seemed perfect for home use.It arrived packaged in a non-descript brown box and even open opening the box, I thought it was something else I had ordered. But it's well packaged and will arrive in good working order. It comes with the same set of tools I was given at my first pottery class, an apron and a tablecloth. The wheel itself is very lightweight, which turns out to be an issue when working with clay. Even when I was doing light touches, the wheel was moving on me. However, the motor is fairly strong and while it complained, it never once hesitated, even when I pressed pretty hard. However, the harder I pressed the more that whole unit wanted to turn, which made it difficult to shape my clay - or even keep the unit on the table. On regular wheels, you use your foot to speed up and slow down, but on here you have a hand control in the middle of a cord that is far too short, so I was having to reach across my table to speed up and slow down which got slip all over the control. This was frustrating because speed control is an important factor in managing how your clay moves for you. The other concern about the plug is that it doesn't plug in all the way to the port. The lack of tray is both nice and horrible all at the same time. You do have more freedom of movement, but the tray captures slip as it sprays off the spinning surface. There can be a lot of water and slip when throwing, so I had water on my table. I was impressed to see that at top speed the water and slip wasn't being thrown across the room, so the use of the tablecloth should be enough. The provided clay is air dry clay and the paints are acrylic - neither of these are food safe. So any pieces made on here are just for display or storage, not the kitchen. I did use clay that needs to be fired in a kiln and it worked just the same. You can get regular clay at a potters supply store, but please connect with the sales person to make sure you get the right clay and understand proper clean up (it cannot go down your sink).Overall, this is a fun wheel and with the powerful motor, it works really well. If you can figure out how to anchor it and are comfortable with the plug situation, this is a solid choice.

My first pottery wheel.
This review is being written from someone with absolutely zero knowledge on anything pottery/pottery wheel related. I got this thing because it seemed like a fun hobby to teach myself using YouTube. It appears to be well-made and it has all the tools that I’m learning how to use. The speed control is on the cord which seems slightly problematic and the entire unit is extremely light and moves around on me while I’m using it, but this could all be user error from someone who has no idea what he’s doing. It seems good to me and I’m happy to go forth and get better. Will update if I break it of something.

It includes 2.2lb of air-dry clay, various shaping and carving tools, paints, a palette, brushes, and even an apron. My experience with it was fantastic—combined with YouTube tutorials, I quickly got the hang of it. The clay is easy to work making it perfect for beginners like me.
