Dark in Death: An Eve Dallas thriller (Book 46)

Sadly disappointing
For years I have been a massive fan of the in death series. I have read them almost from the beginning and love the fact that they are set in a not too distant future which is far from perfect. The main draw for me was the fact that this made them different to anything else I had ever read. The growing relationship between Eve, Roarke and all those around them has been written so well. However the last few books have started to become a bit duller and this one left me feeling totally disappointed. Someone starts a series of copycat murders from books by a crime author. It's a case of reading the books and narrowing down the possible victims and working out what links them to lead to the killer. There is no sub story, most of the work is done by Eve and Roarke, with the rest of the team being almost sidelined. They hardly set foot inside police headquarters and there is no mention of things being OKed by Whitney or Tibble. There are some "guest" appearances by Mavis, Nadine and others but some of them, particularly Mavis, felt contrived and put in to please fans rather than for the story.Perhaps if someone had not read many of the other books they would still find it a good story but for me, I am going back to reread the earlier ones

Hard Going
Have read all the "In Death" series, usually pre-ordering but have to say have been disappointed with the last couple. I found this book dreary, predictable and hard work to finish. There appeared to be little connection made between the usual characters that bring life and interest to the storyline. There are phrases in the text that wouldn't normally be used by Eve and was beginning to wonder if l had picked up a book written by a different author. Will certainly think twice before reading the next in the series which is a shame because l'd always looked forward to the next release.

Worth the wait
Pre-ordered this and have impatiently waited for the release. The wait was definitely worth it, this one had a little more fun added to it than usual and yet lost none of what I have come to enjoy in this series. I always hate to say much in book reviews as it's not fair to other readers. So I shall just say it hits all the right notes for fans, prepare to laugh out loud at the nuts who work with Dallas and of course the lieutenant herself with her usual way of seeing & saying things. For newbies if after this you don't want to go back and read all of the books you're crazier than the flying dwarf (you'll see). Enjoy

THE LAST TIME I WILL BUY J D ROBB
After all these years and reading every book she has written I am officially finished with JD Robb. This latest book is so boring I found myself constantly looking at % read because I just wanted to race to the end. She has just filled it with so much rehashed information from previous books - he touched the dent in her chin, she was wearing this, he was up early owning the world, the cat was looking for attention, blah blah blah. Where were all the colourful characters in her life? I used to be able to laugh and immerse myself in Eve and Roarke’s world but this book was so boring I couldn’t even enjoy the murder plot. I used to pre order and willingly pay full price for J D Robb books, even after long giving up on Nora Roberts in general, but lately I had been waiting a while to achieve a reduction. I won’t even do that again. This author obviously does not read her reviews because she would surely put things right to save her reputation. Other reviewers have wondered if she has a ghost writer and, unfortunately, they may be right.

Boring
I have read all the in death series and I loved loved loved all the characters, the girly situations that eve finds hard to deal with, bella the baby that eve & rourke are frighten off the comedy there was brilliant, eve’s relationship with summerset, Mavis where has she gone. The last couple of books have been boring just concentrating on the two main characters and the murder. The humour has gone right out the door. Where’s rourke’s family in Ireland gone? I’ll really struggled with this book and beginning to think shall I pay more money for a story that will send me asleep. Come on JD Robb give us back the characters that we all fell in love with.

Loved it!
Loved it. I used to buy the books when they first came out, but haven’t been able to afford to do that for the past couple of years, so have just released heavy sighs over them instead. I just treated myself to this one as I have just finished reading all of the books up to this point. I have loved the character development, too, over the series as a whole.I found the story line was different in this book to any before and I liked the unexpectedness of who the muderer was and the changes in how the UNSUB killed. I am loving getting to know more about about the other cops in the Department: the ties; the socks; the hat; never bet against Detective Carmichael; and isn’t it great seeing Officer Shelby? Was Mavis’ reason for being in the book for her cameo paperthin? Yes.Do I care? No. It was a delightful vignette that reminded me all I have learnt about Leonardo, Mavis, and the lovely Bella. And, my, isn’t it great that Das is teaching Bella all those new words?! And in such a short space of time?! Hee hee!I enjoyed some parts of the dialogue so much, that I found myself stopping to re-read some parts, just because I enjoyed them so much. That hasn’t happened as many times in one JD Robb book as it has for me in this one.I confess, knowing Nora Roberts has complained in real life about a lot of what some crazed fans do in this book (e.g. send her plot twists, moan about how people either do or don’t get together in the books like we think they should), for me made it funnier as it felt like this book also told me not to get any ideas... and had Eve Dallas say so!I thought this was a great book, and one I will enjoy reading again and again...as I do the rest of the series.I can’t say that JD is back on form, because I don’t believe she ever lost it. This book is one of the slower paced ones, but it didn’t lack anything for that.Oh look, I haven’t read it for an hour... must be time to start it again, then.... ;)
