What happened to the Confederate Gold?
Well researched and written this is the true story of the flight south of Jefferson Davis and the core of the Confederate Cabinet after the fall of Richmond. Anyone who has wondered what happened to the bullion and gold coins should read this book. While the conclusions are not final, anyone who is interested in the topic needs to read the research. The love story is an intriguing subplot, but despite the title, this book is mainly about the itinerary and factual experiences of the Confederate treasury and its disbursal. Some is buried in ______ and some went to ______ and some just disappeared. My hunch that some of it ended up in ______ ended up being correct. Civil War researchers and treasure hunters should read it .... some of the gold is still out there!

Although the chaotic scene depicted as the Confederate government hastily fled the Richmond capital on the evening of April 2, 1865, is quite detailed and informative, the flight south, especially after leaving Danville, becomes a little disjointed, with considerable military and non-military personnel entering and / or leaving the retreating caravan at multiple points within its route. Though authors Millett and White have researched quite diligently in this exhaustive effort, there remain far too many references to other writers' works (Burke Davis, William Davis, Stephen Mallory, i.e.). Since this particular progression into oblivion presented such historical importance, especially to the South, it would have been helpful to the reader to have been provided any degree of maps to visualize the escape path, along with the routes of the rapidly pursuing Union forces; sadly, none exist within this work.

A Good Read
This is an informative and well written book. Reads like a novel rather than as a history book. Authors provide a great deal of information about the last days of the Confederate government but in a way that compels you to keep turning the pages. A must read for anyone interested in the Civil War.
