The Routledge Atlas of Russian History (Routledge Historical Atlases)

Vital tool
You can't tell the players even with a scorecard--they keep changing the names and the spellings. This books is very helpful in locating the cities and regions which historians talk about. The scope is very broad, from 800 B.C. into the 21st century, with quite a bit of emphasis on the 20th. However, many of the maps are merely schematic, with little detail and lots of white space. Perhaps this is preferable to too much clutter, but I could have used more information about which cities were on which side of the border at some time. Maps are black and white with hatchings. Modern printing techniques can do better.

Ever Changing Map Background
There is a lot of information here and the maps would have been a great way to visualize that information. However, the author uses multiple map backgrounds, different sizes, orientations and scales, constantly changing them w/ what seems no rhyme or reason. Had the author displayed the information on just a few map backgrunds, allowing the reader to follow the information instead of constantly trying to interpret a new map, this would have been a fantastic reference. Instead, it's just ok and barely that.

Kindle version's scanned MAP resolution is not good enough
The scanned MAP's resolution could be better. It should be higher enough to see clearly of the small letters on the map.

Graphic review of 2,000 years of Russian history!
Obviously a great deal of research went into creating this and earlier editions. A recent visitor from Ukraine borrowed it for the three weeks he was here in the US. Fortunately he gave it back when he left and I was then able to study it further. I probably learned more from this book than I did taking a year of Russian history in college over 50 years ago.

Four Stars
Excellent text, very well organized. Graphically, at least in ebook, the maps are no more than serviceable.

Squeezed maps but still informative
Maps are always nice. These are squeezed horizontally so they're hard to read in kindle edition. Same on cloud reader. Not so nice.

Avoid the Kindle edition of this book
Anyone purchasing the Kindle edition of this atlas should be aware that many of the maps do not render properly, but are badly distorted, usually east-west, but sometimes north-south. Pretty much worthless.

If you like maps or Russian history, this book is a must have
This is cover to cover maps. All maps. This would be very useful for a russian history student to have alongside material as a reference.

Very important to know the History and Geography of this region
The author even traced back to the 1600s, when criminals or Political Prisoners were banished to Siberia.

Huge disappointment
I like maps. You can learn a lot about history from maps. Most maps I've ever worked with were in colour and very well presented. Historical atlases are supposed to be collections of well-presented maps in colour that tell a story together with a basic and straightforward textual intro or commentary. I find they offer the best kind of introduction to the history of a country. This atlas, for me, does none of this. Every single map is in black and white. It can take ages to figure out what is being represented visually. Land or sea? various shapes and forms of lines and shadings in black or gey are used to try to differentiate aspects of maps. It is not at all clear, especially if you have less than perfect eyesight, and can become very confusing. The more detailed or unfamilar the information being presented in the text, the simpler and more straightforward the map representation needs to be. This is not the case with this atlas. In short it is a very big mess. I think they were trying to produce it 'inexpensively'. You cannot cut corners with maps; either they are well presented in colour and do the job properly or, please just don't bother to produce the atlas. It's an insult to the reader and to the country and its history. I gave it 2 stars for the nice front cover and the written information which is of interest.I would recommend instead the Penguin Atlas of Russian History. It is more general but the maps are good and the text is straightforward.

Interesting subject, poor quality maps
Not working well on a kindle and at least half the amps are squeed. Otherwise full of very interesting facts-if history is your thing.

si on lit l'anglais
C'est parfait, très détaillé et manque de couleur pour mieux lire les cartes, ça c'est vraiment dommage. Par contre c'est assez documenté et permet de mieux visualiser les mouvements. En appui d'une bonne documentation écrite.
