Maybe you have to be there to understand, but ...
Maybe you have to be there to understand, but this book is about early Ghana during bloody coup days. You can almost feel the fear of running from the new military leaders. We lived there during more peaceful times while serving in the Peace Corps. Hopefully this sort of politics will never return to Ghana.

Good Book
This was a difficult read for me, but I am not as well-read as I would like to be. It's an eye opening book, and one shows what some problems are in the world. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to broaden their mind and learn about the world outside your own.

Vivid images, excellent prose
This book was thoroughly engaging and the scenes described were as clear as I were looking at them with my own eyes. The plot is a little slow to develop, but the author made his point clearly and succintly during its climax. Definitely a recommended reading from a person who does not normally read fiction.

Interesting book
It was definitely a good book and I'm sure anyone who enjoys seeing the underlying representation from various actions or people will love it. I got stuck often and had to reread lines multiple times so it kind of annoyed me.

Excellent Read by a Great African Writer
I read this book back in high school as it was a mandatory read for my literature class. I loved it. The plot and scenes were diverse, and very captivating. The stylistic devices are plenteous and make the story even richer. I loved the Africanness that was injected into the explanation of the story by the author. It makes the writing come alive especially for an African reader born and raised in an African country. I read the book cover to cover and analysed it, at least 4 to 5 times. It was very captivating to me. I would offer this book as a gift to a friend. I would most definitely encourage young and upcoming African children to add this book as one of their "must" reads. African writers during the colonial and early post-colonial era had special gifting and "umph" that always emanated in every write up that they made.

Deep and meaningful read.
Honour and integrity is the core of this novel. When corruption is rife and there is so much to gain it is hard to remain straight and true. When the family aspires for the luxuries and turning a blind eye or a back hander may bring it is hard to retain their respect. Will our hero respect his values and hopes for an honest post colonial state? A superb read.

Prompt delivery. Neat little book.
Prompt delivery of a book that helped me understand the bleakness of a good man's life in a corrupt system.

Not that intriguing
The book wasn’t as interesting as I thought it would have been. I thought I would have been able to get intrigued by it but I wasn’t.

African Classic
One of those books one must read to begin to understand Africa and its 'quirks'. A wonderfully written book that one can never tire of reading - again and again.
