Book of Our Heritage (Pocket Edition)

Thorough and inspiring
The second most important book in my library, next to the Tanakh itself. It's worth carrying around with you wherever you go (if you buy the small version, split up into three volumes, each of which can fit easily in a jacket pocket). Filled with insight, legend and commentary (often expressing both sides of a question), divided up by day of the year and specific instructions, so you will always know the significance of the day that you're living through TODAY. You will never again forget to fast on the Seventeenth of Tammuz, you'll never forget why it's important to do so, and it will never stop inspiring you. This book is also never boring. One note - as this is written from an Orthodox perspective, there is the general sense that the various positive and negative commandments and traditions apply to men. A Jewish woman from an egalitarian perspective should be willing to look past this particular slant (which is consistent with Orthodox teaching but inconsistent with the requirements of the Torah) and find just as much value, so I'd recommend it to men and women as well.

Seems intense...but is just fascinating!
This book is an absolute gem! Not only does it guide the reader through the holidays, giving very detailed information about observances and anomalies and whatnot, but it also provides clear explanations of what and why the holidays are! To give an example, the author writes that one of the calamities that befell the Jewish people on the Seventeenth of Tammuz is that Moses smashed the first set of stone tablets--and then goes on in depth to discuss why Moshe did such a thing, relying on several sources and telling the whole story. It is absolutely fascinating!Don't even know what the Seventeenth of Tammuz is? Don't be intimidated! This book is super user-friendly, for the knowledgeable and the holiday novice alike! Similarly, don't be intimidated by the 3-volume heft of this book: it is well-written and won't feel like a dry encyclopedia. I'm very much enjoying reading it.

What a Heritage! ישוע הו המשיעכ
A really well done translation from the Hebrew. Have YOU made Aliyah or AT LEAST volunteered in the צהל? If not, WHY NOT??? Given that Messianic Jewish synagogues are rapidly outsizing the tiny Orthodox remnant, NOW is the time for you to read this erudite book WHILE reviewing the claims of Messiah Yeshua!!!Jewish as per Israel’s “Law of Return”? mjaa.orgGOY??? A wonderful compiliation of thoughts and insights from a master of Yiddishkeit
This is a wonderful compilation of thoughts and insights from the masters (Kitov being one of them, along with his sources). I enjoy reading it before and during the yomim tovim and as a general reference.

Wow, just great
These books are brilliant. For someone with a weak background in my Judaism, having the book is a great companion. It covers every aspect of holidays and Jewish calender. It explains how something should be done, why its done this way, how the tradition came about, and then any midrash on the subject. Its not a dry read. The inclusion of stories, history, and debates make it an easy read. The books have a great ability to quickly build a foundation on holidays, but still provide more then enough in-depth that provides intellectual stimulation to keep you reading.

These three volumes are probably the best kosher orthodox introduction to Jewish views and observances there is. You will resort to it again and again and it is doubtful you will ever be disappointed. I have a large Judaica library, but these sit close to me in the living room.
