The Religion of Islam

Excellent books for gaining knowledge of Islam from a traditional Hanafi perspective if one knows orthodox Aqeedah (Beliefs).
I'm giving this book 5 stars despite the fact that Maulana Muhammad Ali was of the Ahmadiyya sect, a splinter from the Qadiani sect. I don't believe for a second the Ghulam Ahmad was the Mahdi. However, Maulana Muhammad Ali was an excellent scholar nonetheless. Because the Hanafi School of Jurisprudence allows the Mahdi to be a non-Arab, of course the Ahmadiyya sect uses the Hanafi School of Jurisprudence. It appears from my reading of this book that the Ahmadiyya also follows the traditional Hanafi method of evaluating tradition. Many modern Hanafi shaykhs use Hanafi fiqh, but evaluate traditions according to the method of the Shafie School. Some Hanafi scholars are returning to the Hanafi method of evaluating traditions, which is a good thing because it allows both options to be available. If a reader knows in advance the distinctive Ahmadiyya teachings that traditional Sunni and Shia Muslims reject, then this book is good for digging deeper or as a refresher, or even as a reference book, so long as one is aware of those distinctive teachings.I also recommend Maulana Muhammad Ali's Quran Translation, which heavily influenced Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthal's Quran Translation. I personally believe M. M. Ali's translation is better than Pickthal's, and for me that's saying a lot because Pickthal's translation is the one that I read first, and started me on the path to becoming a Muslim, thank Allah (SWT). Again, the commentary is of concern because of Ahmadiyya distinctives. However, if you know what they are in advance, you ignore them and take advantage of the excellent and clear commentary. I find M. M. Ali to be an excellent communicator whose books are still quite usable today.I also recommend his collection of Hadith as a good introduction to Sunni traditions. It might be good to read a recommended book on Aqeedah (basic Muslim beliefs) before reading these works, unless you've already obtained that knowledge. As long as you basic Sunni beliefs, Maulana Muhammad Ali's books will give you excellent information, especially when in a study group led by a Shaykh.

Most Comprehensive Single Volume Text on the Islamic Faith
greetings to one and all!As a lay Muslim reader and student of the faith, i have read many, and examined most, Islamic books (from bookstores and to libraries) dealing exclusively with the theology of Islam; in my search, i have found very few books that can match the dimensions and depth of Islam covered by this eminent Lahori scholar, Maulana Muhammad Ali, in this single volume, The Religion Islam. The Maulana takes the reader on journey of Islam, using the most authentic of sources, and under the most authoritative of interpretation. The writer was undoubtedly one hundred years ahead of his time; he has addressed any and everything a believer or sceptic wants to know about the religion of Islam; from revelation to modernity; from angels to devils; from rituals and sacred practices to rights and obligations; from polygamy to apostasy, and a host of other subject. The Maulana's magnus opus is his: The Holy Qur'an, Arabic Text, Translation and Commentary.Caveat: the Maulana was an original founding member of the original Ahmadiyya movement, under Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, after whose death, the movement broke apart. The Maulana founded the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Isha`at Islam and moved to Lahore*.English revert and translator of the Qur'an, Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall, in reviewing the "Religion of Islam" stated words to the effect that "this book has not moved a hair's breath from Islam's sacred orthodoxy."Final note: anyone (believer, sceptic or atheist), seriously thinking of understanding Islam as a faith and as a way of life, should avail him/herself to the Maulanas' two primary publications: the Translation of the Quran, and the Religion of Islam, both of which i recommend without reservation or hestitation.*i am NOT an Ahmadi; i'm just an ordinary seeker of knowledge on the road to Truth!my best wishes on your searchmohamad k yusuff

Great overview of Muslim beliefs and practices
One of the best surveys of Muslim belief and practice that I have read in over 13 years of study if Islam. Maulana Muhammad Ali's translation and commentary on the Qur'an is also a wonderful resource.

Religion of Islam
A very illuminating and informative book that comprehensively analyses the tenets and requirements of Islam whilst debunking many deep seated myths and falsehood spread by fundamentalist and those opposed to Islam. Highly recommend reading for those who genuinely want to know about Islam and the prescribed way of living for Muslims. It has stood the test of time and is more relevant today than when it was first published 85years ago!
