Amazing Value in a 27 Speed Folder
We recently decided to a get a folding bike for a few upcoming trips, without spending much money since the bike will see little use.I found a number of folding bikes in the $300-$500 range, but eventually purchased the SoloRock Fire because it is relatively light weight, folds into a small package and, most importantly, comes equipped with a 3 x 9 drivetrain. All of the other bikes I looked at in this price range come with a 7 or 8 speed drivetrain, which would be adequate for slow, short trips on flat land, but not for my needs. It is worth noting the Fire model comes with the larger 20" wheel, 451, versus the more standard 406 size. On the plus side the larger wheel provides more stable handling, however, it does limit your tire choices - although new oversized 451 BMX tires do allow you to put on a tire wider than the stock 1 3/8".The bike arrived with many pieces of packing material and zip ties holding it in a safe bundle. As a result, there were no chips or scratches to the frame's paint or other parts. I've had worse experience with bikes costing 10 times as much. This bike does NOT come ready to ride. When you purchase it you have the option to pay for a handy man to come to your home to adjust it. A better choice would be to take it to your local bike shop. Needed adjustments on my bike included the brakes, derailleurs, one folding hinge, plus the wheels needed to be trued. As a former bike mechanic, I performed these tasks myself. Otherwise be prepared to pay $75 or more to make your bike safe to ride.As with any folding bike there are many quick releases to make adjustment quick and easy. The great majority work well and are good quality. Unfortunately, the nut on the rear wheel quick release was damaged beyond use, and the front wheel quick release was simply too cheaply made to trust. I found a nice pair of replacement skewers on ebay for $9.26. The good news is the wheels allow the use of quick releases, whereas many inexpensive folding bikes require a wrench to remove the wheels.Overall, the SoloRock Fire is an amazing value for the money. I could easily imagine this bike selling for $700 in a bike shop.
