Do NOT follow the instructions!
The instructions say to pull the spring loaded handle out as far as it will go, then release. I guess that was their little joke, because when I dutifully did as I was told, the egg was smashed to little bits and hot yolk was sprayed across me and the table. And, as another reviewer has already mentioned, if you do that while the egg is held in a rigid cup then the egg gets topped at both ends. In fact in my case the eggcup end was clacked perfectly, but it was pretty much all that was left of the egg! With a bit of practice I've found that the egg is best held firmly and gently in your hand (use a paper towel if the egg is too hot), pull the clacker out about 75%, and let go. You'll know it worked because the clacker is now attached to the egg. A little pull (don't grip the egg too hard) and the perfect end pulls off, leaving the membrane behind. Proceed from there as you wish!It takes a bit of getting used to, but after that I've found it to be much more consistent than using a knife or spoon. And the results are more elegant too of course.

You need one of these in your life!
If you don't have one of these in your life and you enjoy the occasional egg and soldiers then you have to buy it immediately! It takes a bit of getting used to so you don't pull the mechanism too far and end up crushing the egg.I find it works best when you rest the egg on a tea towel which has been folded many times to make a cushion and then pull the yellow ball just under an inch and let go.It should give a lovely accurate cut which you then have to slice the top off with a very thin sharp knife.Excellent product, I am not sure how I survived without one!

good product
Don't believe the picture it's not always that perfect, when i fist bought this i thought it wouldn't be that good. You do need to practise with this and you can get the top to come straight off but the rest of the time it just cuts round the shell not the membrane most of the time without a mess or broken shell. If you have small eggs you will struggle to get this to work, needs to be medium and above. There are more expensive ones out there and have not tried these.Would i buy again? YesValue for money? just aboutWell built? seems to be (only had a few weeks)

Brilliant.
My husband says this is the best gadget I've ever bought.I use it every morning and it works every time and is very efficient. If you have a very soft boiled egg you have to be careful not to clack it too hard or the egg can suffer, but it's a matter of practice to get it right. I find that once I've clacked it I need to use a paring knife to cut around the cut so that the top comes off, but that's a matter of a couple of seconds, so it's fine. You then have a clean cut that's a good diameter, and it makes things really easy.

Did the trick
I find the most correct way for me is to pull it up half way twice, give me a perfect cut.

if at first
my first egg ended up in bits, the egg all over the place.but I had to get it rightso did not raise it so high.hand on the clacker to keep it firm on the egg, raised it a couple of inches and let go.gently move the clacker,it will havecrack near the top, slice through with a knife and you will have a perfectlyboiled egg

Hit and miss, but I like it
I'm sure its me. The very first time I used this clacker, my egg split perfectly. I was amazed. After that initial success, its been hit and miss for me. Sometimes the egg collapses a bit. I think its down to technique and confidence. However, it is a million times better than scolding your fingers whilst trying to pick shell off the egg after bashing it with a spoon.....I'll get better with practise.
