I cannot touch raw wood...it's like fingernails on a chalkboard.
I order a LOT from Amazon and I usually don't bother with reviews but when it comes to Earlywood and this rolling pin I'm in! I've been a customer of Earlywood for about a year and am in love with their products. Each item I've ordered has been a work of art by itself. But I'm into function more than form and there, too the products are excellent. I use every single one of them from the cutting board to the tasting spoons to the spatulas (great design btw) to the toddler spoon which fits my grandson's hands perfectly...and I like seeing his name engraved on the spoon.So...I'm a kitchen maven and have yearned for a rolling pin like this but have held off because most of them are either too big or too raw wood looking. I have a problem touching wood! if it's raw like a popsicle stick, it makes me shiver (notice I said I've bought a lot of Earlywood products.)When the Earlywood email came across and I saw this French rolling pin AND that Christopher Kimball had been consulted on the design and measurements (that's Christopher Kimball ex of America's Test Kitchen now of Milk Street fame...the very picky Christopher Kimball) I didn't hesitate to put in my order. The rolling pin arrived and I am beyond happy...it's one of the most beautiful pieces of wooden kitchenware I've ever seen and it feels wonderful! the size is right, the length perfect, it's got heft and it's an altogether 100% score! If you want to be happy with the kitchen items you use every day, I urge you to look at Earlywood and if you have wanted one of these rolling pins this might be exactly what you need. Thanks Brad and band of merry woodworkers out there in the wild west...you did good!

Looks gorgeous. Hope to keep it for many years.
I have the version with ebony and it is truly wonderful to look at. As for rolling, I was a bit concerned about how the considerable taper would work out since I was used to a large, flat and heavy rolling pin. I can say that it is actually quite helpful to have the taper as you can more minutely direct the pressure of rolling. The pin itself is quite light so you will need to apply pressure yourself. I highly recommend ordering some mineral oil or other appropriate oil along with the pin as a light application brings out the colors very nicely. As some others mentioned, there were some slight irregularities in the surface on arrival. The pin comes with a bit of burnishing material and the instructions say you should use it periodically to smooth those type of irregularities.

Perfect weight
I wanted a rolling pin that would give smooth even edges and was told to get a French style rolling pin. I discovered this brand on Amazon because of the reviews. The wood is smooth, I mean there are no breaks, nicks, splinters to be found. It is sanded to perfection. It tapers off from the middle evenly to each side. One of the best parts is the weight, you can comfortably alternate direction without getting tired from moving a heavy log like the standard bowling pins, I mean rolling pins 😛.The color I ordered was the Jatoba-Ebony-Maple French type of wood. After unboxing, I cleaned it and used it to roll out pizza dough. Simply put, this rolling pin is gorgeous! It’s something that needs to be shown in your kitchen like a work of art because it is in both looks and function.

Beautiful and practical
I bought this for my wife and she loves it. She had given up on baking pies but when she saw this, she took it up again. We lived in France for many years and this is the design that any French patissier would prefer. It is perfect for rolling out pie crusts. My wife loves the beautiful design and refuses to put it in a drawer because it adds to the kitchen decor.

... products in the past and have always been extremely happy with the quality
I have purchased several Earlywood products in the past and have always been extremely happy with the quality. It starts with the packaging. The item was carefully wrapped in white tissue paper and then brown craft paper with a seal. Also included was a small Scotch-Brite pad labeled "Wood Care" with care instructions. The layers of wood are expertly sealed with no gaps and sanded smooth. I found the length to be ideal for rolling out pastry and dough, large enough to make a job quick, small enough to maneuver easily. The ends taper so that you can hold it without worrying about your hands. The size makes it easy to store in the drawer, but it is so pretty that I may need to figure out how to display it.

Another work of art
This rolling pin is made from one of several great woods, which are described in the info that comes with the pin. I've used a French style pin forever, and I gave one to my son-in-law who loves to cook. Sometimes you buy a product, and sometimes you buy an item made with craftsmanship. The quality is the difference, and this rolling pin is great. It's a delight to use, and your pie crusts never come out uneven when you use this kind of pin.

Good design and quality
I love the rolling pin and the weight it has which is helpful to roll out pasty dough. The taper design is very easy on the hands and I can’t wait to start using this whenever I bake
