Sad and shocking
Gritty film about how a schoolgirl with an unwanted pregnancy seeks an abortion in a country when terminations were illegal, in this case France. The dangers she puts herself through to get what she needs is a warning about what can happens today in countries where abortion is being outlawed, such as the USA. A powerful film.

Incredibly powerful cinema
"Happening" (original title "L'événement") is based on the autobiographical novel "L'événement" by the award winning author Annie Ernaux, and is adapted and directed by Audrey Diwan, incredibly in only her second film as a director. The film has an amazing cast that includes Anamaria Vartolomei in the lead role of Anne Duchesne who is incredible, and there's a supporting cast that includes Luàna Bajrami (the pregnant maid in "Portrait de la Jeune Fille En Feu"/"Portrait of a Lady on Fire"), Sandrine Bonnaire, Pio Marmaï, Alice de Lencquesaing, and Anna Mouglalis amongst others.I found "Happening" to be incredibly tense at times as well as for making very uncomfortable and uncompromising cinema to watch, and all credit to the director and everyone involved for achieving that. This is the kind of film that is difficult to apply "enjoy" to but for me it was incredibly gripping and emotional. The story might well be as old as the hills, but the telling of that story in "Happening" and Anamaria Vartolomei's role as Anne Duchesne in the story I would say should not be missed."Happening" is an historical drama set in the France of 1963 but the story could be set today depending on where you live, and the film is all the more powerful for that. Historical yes, but not in the sense of this is how it "used to be" necessarily. On the DVD (ASIN : B0B25S4MR7) you get:"Happening" (1 hour 35 minutes)Scene SelectionSet Up: 5.2/2.1 Optional English SubtitlesTheatrical Trailer

I do not recommend
Like all French movies, this one is a dud -- I nearly fell asleep waiting for something to happen. Don't waste your money!
