Roadside Geology of Arizona

Books are not meant to be folded.
Getting into geology lately. Plan to read about Arizona this winter. Book was is very nice condition until it was folded in half by carrier to get it into my p.o. box. Hoping the crease will go away. Perhaps if shipper had included a couple pieces of stiff corrugated cardboard the book would not have been folded and would still be in "like new" condition.Seems this book is an older edition as there are very few color photos. Perhaps I will be able to find alternate photos on line as I read about specific areas of Arizona.

Incomplete
I was disappointed. The book does NOT include anything about the section of I-15 going through the Virgin River gorge. It's only about 20 miles long, but various faults and the river have created an amazing, up close display of geology. The highway itself is an impressive engineering feat as it straddles the river as they work their way through the multiple rock layers.Future editions will hopefully remedy this oversight.

Not what was expected
This is a good book, but its written for people taking road trips though Arizona and what you'll see from point a to point b, I was hoping for something general

If you're into Geology, this is for you
Used it going from Tucson to Sedona, Flagstaff and then the Grand Canyon. My hobby has always been geology so I'm used to more academic geology text books but this had plenty of information as we drove/stopped/drove, etc. I wasn't disappointed in the least and it is perfect for someone who is interested in knowing how and why the terrain they are driving across began. I'm fascinated by structural geology so I did end up purchasing a textbook at the Grand Canyon and I will have both of these with me on my next trip. A note ... I bought this from the Tucson Goodwill Store and I always try to do that because I've yet to be disappointed by a Goodwill book. This book had no wear and was in perfect condition (as usual). It lovingly has highlights and my annotations now but I plan to keep it as a reference and I didn't want to miss my impressions. Good job Goodwill.

Very interesting book
Wherever I go, I always have a roadside geology book by my side. Living in Arizona, there is so much of interest from a geological point of view. All you have to do is drive, and when you see something of interest, either have your friend read to you from the book, or just pull over and do a little digging. The organization of material is really excellent and will help even the novice geologist.Section one covers the simple, basic introductory geology information. Next, it breaks down the three provinces that make up Arizona. What is great is the book covers various geology that you can see while traveling Arizona highways. This is really a fun book.

I love this book......
I absolutely love this book and take it with me anytime I take a drive out of town. This book also follows me when I go flying small aircraft as a lot of the features mentioned in the book are visible from the air; it makes the cruise across the state more interesting. Its is very informative but not so dry and science-y that it will bore the reader. I ended up buying one for my parents (who refer to themselves as rock hounds), and they love the book too. A few people at my work saw it and are ordering it now. My only misgiving is that the book is not in color as some in the series are (such as Colorado's), but the book still is an absolute must for when I travel and I would recommend it to anyone.

Stop And Smell the Rocks
In ROADSIDE GEOLOGY OF ARIZONA, Halka Chronic relates the story of Arizona's geology, which varies considerably from North to South. In the Basin & Range area, where I live, collisions between vast tectonic plates built mountains that rivaled the Sierras before they were worn down by millions of years of wind, water, and unrelenting sun. In the Phoenix area, I have hiked through the roots of those ancient mountains, metamorphic rocks that have been crushed, pushed and pulled into new forms and wild shapes. All my life I've wondered about them: what they are, how old they are, why they're here. Halka Chronic answers those questions.I used to just gaze out the window and wonder about roadside geology when I was on a trip. Now I consult the Roadside Geology series. I can't help it! I'm a Geology nerd. Make that HAPPY geology nerd. This book is highly recommended.
