They obviate the need for a lid and offer a perfect fit for various water containers. The only down point is the storage bag. It ripped open along one seam less than a week after it arrived. No big deal, just found a cheap small laundry bag to keep them in. But still...

Didn't know what to expect but these are basically hollow hard plastic balls that seem good quality and not flimsy or breakable like I was concerned about. Instead of cooking in a pot or thin container, I put my cooker in a small cooler with these on top and it heats about 6 gallons of water with no problem, allowing me to cook more food at once ( I was using it for holiday cooking with family so needed larger batches). When I am done using, I just scoop them off with a slotted spoon into the included mesh storage bag, which I can hang up and they dry themselves off. Would definitely recommend for anyone using an immersion cooker to cook sous vide.

Quite versatile, and really works well to hold down steam, cooling, and evaporation.Unlike a lid, you can always reach in and move bags around, and they conform to any shape. The balls are much thicker than a ping-pong ball and won't crush or dent easily.The only downside is the mesh bag. It was nice when new, but the stitching quickly came apart. A good laundry mesh bag costs almost as much as the balls, unfortunately..
