Star Trek The Original Series: The Full Journey [DVD]

Full ahead, Mr Sulu.
Just to be clear I am reviewing the Complete Series on Blu-ray.I wasn't sure about buying this, but after buying the movie box set my nostalgia took over and I gave in. My initial reticence was down to the fact that I've lost count how many times I've seen every episode and I wasn't sure if I wanted to pay to watch them again as they are always on TV somewhere. And boy, am I glad I did. The remastering has to be amongst the best I've seen, especially for a show made in the 60's. The picture is crystal clear and the new effects add that little bit extra, there is an option to watch the episodes as they were originally shot, without the special effects enhancements, but I'm going to watch the newer versions first. The newer effects have been done as sympathetically as possible but they do still stand out a bit at first. After a few episodes you adjust and can just sit back and enjoy.Sadly, the sound quality doesn't match up to the picture quality. As has already been pointed out the voice track seems quite far down in the mix, meaning you have to crank up the volume very high. This also means that the sound level sometimes jumps when you go from dialogue to action. Even listening through a sound bar with the Clear Voice setting doesn't improve it much.Unlike earlier versions this box set comes in a proper Blu-ray case so no issues with discs being scratched or coming loose. The episodes are also now in the original American broadcast order. All in all it's a set worth owning if you are a fan looking to upgrade, or add to, your collection.I'm not going to knock any stars off for the quibble about the sound as this box set is amazing value for the price.

Space the final frontier...
When William Shatner did the narration for the series in the 1960's little did he know, or anybody else for that matter, that it would have been the success that it was. Fifty years on, and it still gets more air time than it did back then. Now we get to experience it all over again in this box set. This blu ray set contains all 79 episodes, including the original pilot (rejected by NBC) 'The Cage'. You have a choice with each episode as to what format you would like to view the episode in. Either the original screening, or the re-mastered version. All the episodes are in surround sound and the sound and picture quality are first rate. I view mine on a LG Blu ray 4k player, which upscales them to vertual 4K.There are host of extras to view, also commentaries to hear whilst viewing the episodes. Two moans though- would the manufactures please include a booklet explaining the episodes, rather than trying to squeeze it on to the inner sleeves. Secondly please include a 'Play All' option. That said it is one beautiful box set.

Still good stories.A bit too much computer restoration.
I still like the story lines and actors. The computer rendering can be too much, bright colour schemes for walls and Planetary atmospheres.I definately do not like the computer graphic exterior shots of the Enterprise. They still cannot compare with a handmade scale model. The film 2001 used scale models. You could not come even close to matching them with computer graphics.I doubt anyone today has the modeling craft skills, or the necessary cinephotograhy skills,to make a film comparable to 2001.

Set of DVDs with multiple faults/read errors
Impossible to recommend this set. 3 of the 4 DVDs that I chose at random to watch threw up read-errors on each of several DVD players that I tried. No scratches or smudges are apparent on examination, but I did notice the discs themselves are much flimsier than other DVDs that I own - they are somewhat translucent, almost like the kind of inferior, unbranded DVD and CD blanks you buy on a spindle in the local supermarket. I had to submit a star rating, just to comply with Amazon protocol for reviews, but in truth, this set doesn't deserve that one star. Very disappointing. I am returning them to Amazon for a refund.

Set Phasers to Joy, and beam me up...
I grew up with Star Trek TOS, so this is a totally biased review.Beautiful image quality, stunning and above all respectful updated visual effects, that fit the original vision, and, well, it's Star Trek for goodness sake... What more do you need to know.Oh, and, once you've watched all the origin shows again and again, you can start again, watching them with their original effects.

To boldly go HD!
All three series in both original and converted hd formats. Quite fun to see what was TV standard and then compare it.The bluray conversion is great, hd 1960,s TV is odd, you really can see walls wobble etc- kinda part of the charm. If you like special features then each disk has some nice commentary and video bits. If you like lots of the extras then you might want more. There's no booklet or extra literature in the set, so sometimes it can be a pain working out what was the last episode you watched unless you binge them.I'm a sci-fi fan so really enjoyed watching the 3 series, now the original movies makes more sense as does the follow on series.

Loved It!
Boxset arrived in good time and I was absolutely thrilled when I opened it up! The series was in pristine condition and the quality of it all was brilliant! The only fault I would have to pick with it is the 'sleeves' the discs are kept in. They don't do a very good job of holding the discs in sometimes so they easily scratch but you just have to be careful with them. The whole layout when popping them in the DVD player was very exciting; you open up to the sounds of the enterprise as well as the episode options being listed on the set out screen of the transporter pad. All of the discs have worked in perfect order and I couldn't be happier with purchase of my favourite TV series. It made a very exciting watch and if you didn't love the series before the quality of this certainly did the trick!Would recommend to anyone! LLAP
