flash in the pan
The extremely pleasing gunpowder scent fades almost immediately. The almond you're left with is not quite strong enough to overpower the grandmotherly scent of the lotion itself. Not unpleasant, but not what I was looking for. The lotion is not greasy, but also isn't terribly moisturizing, and I feel I need a new application after several minutes. Not sorry I purchased this, but I won't buy it again. I'll stick with my Burt's Bees. Product comes in a little novelty burlap sack, which is charming. I might use it to store... things?

Works well, but the scent is a bit too overwhelming and not really what I expected
I really wanted to like these, as I was looking for some woodsy scents as that's sort of hard to find in handcream, but the smell was just so so intense, and not really at all the smell I was expecting. I got two in different scents, but they both wound up smelling the same. They smell sort of like the inside of an nyc taxi lol, or like the inside of that one cobblers shop I used to go to in my hometown. I kind of like that smell because it's a bit nostalgic for me, but I really only want that smell for brief moments, and I don't really want other people to look at me confused and go "you smell like the inside of a taxi." The smell would be fine if it went away after a few minutes, but it's so strong and intense and it sticks around for a long time.

Actually did explode
It was my friend's birthday and my husband sent me a link to this with a text saying "This is it! This is what we are getting for Mark's birthday, buy this, buy it now." So I did. It arrived as described, like it had been in an explosion. There was lotion everywhere. As we read through the description on the label, we had to scrape the lotion off the side of the bottle to read. It was obvious that no package could contain such a product, it was just too awesome. But seriously, how often can you buy someone a present and it show up busted and all you think to yourself is "Perfect." If it comes damaged, that is just part of the charm. We all slathered this beautiful smelling and highly moisturizing product all over our bodies as we laughed hysterically at the label suiting the circumstances so well. It must be noted that in-between our unconstrained laughter we all remarked that the lotion was bomb and after a long day on the beach it was everything we could possibly had hoped for.

Showed up at the wrong party: they had neither guns nor firewood.
NOT AT ALL like campfire, gunpowder, or whiskey.4 stars as a lotion.Actual smell is musky, in a good way, like antique leather, with undertones of a sweet cocktail that contains a splash of whiskey. It smells good, but I have to give it 2 Stars because it's grossly mislabeled.

lots of bluster, but mostly inoffensive in person
Nice creamy feel, but smells mostly like a moisturizing cream. Not getting any campfire, for sure; maybe a faint whiff of lumber. Not sure if I maybe chose the wrong scent, but as a person who often sniffs my clothes happily after a camping trip, just for the smell, I was hoping for something stronger.(I did double-check that it wasn't just my nose: can smell my sandalwood creme just great, as well as another funky smoke/spice cream...)Update: this is a really great moisturizing cream for dry hands, and I have to say that I enjoy sniffing my hands (fresh-cut wood + sage, I'd say) after I put it on, so it must be hitting some buttons, even if it's not the smell that I expected.

I'm a man who loves lotions, and Outlaw is the best!
5 Stars and certainly recommend! I get really dry skin, especially my feet, so I've tried lots of lotions. These are definitely some of the best lotions that I have ever purchased! Really love the "masculine" scents. As for the few reviews I've seen saying anything negative about how it smells, those people will probably go through life unhappy and impossible to please. I've tried 3 kinds and each one smells fantastic. Definitely present when applying, but subtle afterward. Moisturizes well, doesn't feel "greasy" later, and has made progress on my feet where other lotions have failed.Specific to Fire In The Hole, even though it isn't in the description, I would say it's almost a cinnamon-y scent. Never thought I would love a hint of gundpowder smell, but have enjoyed it in each one so far. Anyway, stop looking for other lotions and try one of these!

Spicy hints of sagebrush and camp fires!
I bought this for myself after reading the description and let me just say I am not disappointed! I've read a lot of the negative reviews and gotten a good chuckle! Before you buy any lotion, you have to take into account that you are buying a lotion! It is still going to have some froufrou elements, no matter what! The second thing to remember is that lotions and soaps react to people's body chemistries differently, so a strong smell like leather or gunpowder may not stand out as predominantly on someone as almond. Don't blame the manufacturer for something that may be perfectly natural because I have smelled like a cowboy, all day! My coworker just told me that if I were a guy, she'd date me! XD It does leave me looking a bit shiny as natural lotions tend to do for me, but I'm not greasy, which is nice! I love this lotion! Totally worth it! Will be buying more!

It smells how it says it smells
I have this scent in solid cologne as well and it is a good match. The first time I asked my wife to smell it and tell me what she thought it smelled like, she said, "It smells like camping... like a campfire." I don't think I've ever worn a more manly scent that actually reminds you of spending a day on the firing range and then camping out. It smells exactly as advertised. The downside to this lotion, as is the downside to the solid cologne version, is the staying power. You lather this on right after a shower and you have maybe an hour or two until the scent is undetectable. It's disappointing because it smells so good that you want to smell it for hours. It's still enjoyable, but a triple-strength formula option would really turn all of these products into the best thing out there.
