The Man in the Red Bandanna

I read this book to my 6th grade students as a way of introducing a conversation about 9/11.

My kids and I loved this book. I'm so thankful that people who experienced such horror and tragedy are beautiful and brave to tell their stories about that terrible day of terrorism and loss. The ones who understand best are the ones missing from our world forever and the survivors who carry their memory and tell their stories of strength and Heroism always. My kids draw sometimes and my daughter was drawing from this book for a couple days after reading.

I ordered several new books about 9/11 this year to add to the small collection I already had. The Man in the Red Bandana was their outright favorite. They connected to this story more than any other, possibly because he received the bandana as a child, and their 8-yr.-old selves saw themselves in the story. I highly recommend this book for children, and for teachers who are looking for a way to make real life connections with students.

It's probably safe to assume that on the morning of September 11, 2001, 24 year old Welles Crowther prepared for an average Tuesday, never dreaming that before lunchtime he would perform acts of heroism which would put 24's Jack Bauer to shame.From her vantage point as Welles's sister and mother of a growing family, the author tells her brother's amazing story in a manner that is always positive, never frightening. In roughly the first half of the book the reader learns from a child's standpoint how Welles developed his interest in fire safety and how the famous red bandanna became a permanent part of his wardrobe. From that comes the details of Welles' non-stop efforts to save as many lives as possible in the brief time he was given that day. Personally I was amazed at the author's ability to present a short, action-packed story meant to inspire admiration not fear. John Crowther's bright, colorful illustrations serve as a backdrop to reassure the reader that Welles' s story is true and was given by primary witnesses whose lives Welles saved that day. Once again, the information is provided in a simple, child-friendly manner.Son and brother, fire-fighter, athlete and loyal friend, Welles Crowther was a living American super-hero whose intelligence and dashing bravery make him an exciting role model. Highly recommend this book!

What a great job you did explaining for a child how Welles became a hero and how his red bandanna became a special piece of his Life. I was wondering how you would explain people losing thier lives and I appreciate how you eased back into the purpose of his life rather than the loss. Excellent job. You should write another in greater detail for the teen. And than another for the adult. It would be my pleasure to learn more about this wonderful man and son. All my Love, CAROL

There is nothing to d iui slike in this book. An excellent read and teaching history in our country. Puechased for my 8 yo grandson and he thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is a story about an unsung hero. When an ordinary individual becomes extraordinary. It’s tearfully beautiful and the artist captures the “Man in the RedBandanna “… I read it to my 2nd and 3rd graders. I gave it to my grandchild who lives in NYC.

I use this as a read aloud with my 4th graders. A new perspective of 9/11 that focuses on the an unknown hero. Leads to a great discussion about helping strangers.

This book is great. As a mom, and American, that home schools her children, I first heard Welles’ story a couple years ago, and each anniversary of 9-11, I would play the Clips of his story. Just this year I discovered that this book. I immediately ordered the book, and had it sent to Canada. My nine year old son now carries a red bandana in his back pocket and it makes me so proud every time he pulls it out and uses it as a racing flag or a cowboy’s mask.
