Orville Season 1

The critics have failed us. This series is actually a phenomenal addition to television.
This show was given a 34/100 on Metacritic, one of the lowest ratings given to a TV show this year. And I have no clue why.The Orville is one of the most sincere and well-created love letters to Star Trek: The Next Generation, taking not just the cues and themes of it to present compelling original stories, but also using the directing and writing talent of those who originally contributed to it. The Orville is admittedly a lot different from what I expected it to be, but different in ways I appreciate. Comedy takes a back seat, only coming out in small doses when appropriate as to not be too intrusive. And at the forefront is a genuine science fiction story that subtly dips and weaves into topical and ethical dilemmas that are neither condescending nor ham-fisted.Just like Star Trek: The Next Generation was.The critics are completely wrong about this show. The Orville is a fantastic voyage, and while it has some minor flaws in story and character, it never loses its flavor. It's not a parody of TNG. It's not a satire. It's not a reboot. It's a standalone compliment that carries the torch where TNG left off, and seeks to establish its own personality beyond it.

So Much Better Than Discovery
Absolutely love it!My husband and I are huge Star Trek fans (the original series, Next Generation and Voyager). We have been super disappointed with the newer iterations of Star Trek - they've somehow lost the humanity and turned Star Trek into a tiresome soap-opera.But The Orville recaptured the spirit of Star Trek and lifted it to new heights. Seth MacFarlane is a fantastic, down to earth captain who reacts realistically to bizarre situations. I really can't believe how much I have enjoyed this show. I truly hope it continues for several more seasons!5 thumbs up!

I'm hooked!
So the advertising was somewhat misleading in a way; touted as a "Galaxy Quest" type spoof of Star Trek, I like many others, was prepared for a humor-filled romp in space. The Orville is not the parody we thought we were getting and after just viewing the second episode, I am delighted to say we've gotten something far better - especially for Star Trek and Sci-fi enthusiasts. The premiere episode was a little wonky in the respect that there was a push and pull effect between giving us Seth MacFarlane's style of comedy writing and the lovingly recreated look, feel and story elements of "Star Trek: The Next Generation".I would say that expectations for a goofy space comedy and maybe a few out of placed jokes in the premiere, rocked the boat a little because at its heart, this show is NOT a parody - it's classic sci-fi space adventure that's been inspired by Star Trek TNG, and I gotta say...after that second episode, I'm in love.To virtually rewind time and bring us a show that feels like TNG but with humor sprinkled throughout feels so fresh yet familiar at the same time.I do feel some of the actors need time to grow into their parts, much like how TNG needed a few seasons under its belt for everyone to come into their own and the writers started writing for the actors who play the parts and not the other way around.Keep telling solid sci-fi stories with character growth that makes us love them like a TV family and I'll keep watching!I sincerely hope this show continues past the first season - it'll take all the support of Trek fans to keep those high ratings.McFarlane needs to focus on placing the comedy bits more effectively and sparingly - let the comedy come naturally and lean more towards solid sci-fi storytelling and this ship will be firing on all engines, full speed ahead.

Much, Much Better Than We Thought It Would Be
We were very pleasantly surprised with "The Orville".Given the trend of Seth MacFarlane to make his comedy shows like "Family Guy" into celebrations of gross-violence-gore-humor, we had concerns that what looked fairly promising in the trailers might be yet another one of these kinds of creations.THANKFULLY, it was not!"The Orville" is a fun mix of what feels like classic 90s & early 2000s sci-fi, with the help of modern visual effects."Galaxy Quest" meets "SeaQuest", with the visual and musical honorable trimmings of "Star Trek: The Next Generation", tongue-in-cheek/camp essences of "Stargate SG-1", and a hint of "Spaceballs" (for the occasional adult humor). Funny enough, even the Orville ship looks sort of like the "Galaxy Quest" NSEA Protector.Straight up, for a concept that could have been an outright disaster, "The Orville" has a good pilot episode, and all the characters are immediately watchable. Also, we finally get to see Seth MacFarlane have the opportunity to extend his acting talents beyond just "Family Guy"-style comedy characters, given that his character has the option to handle more serious and dramatic scenes.Given how rough pilots (and first seasons, for that matter) have been for many now-iconic sci-fi shows like "Star Trek: The Next Generation", "Babylon 5", and "Farscape", if they can keep their trademark "Family Guy" vomit gags to a minimum, I think this show has every chance to grow into itself and discover where it can go.We'll be watching!Good luck!(Update 10/20/2017: 6 episodes in, the series continues to exceed expectations!Strangely, it feels way more like Star Trek than the new Star Trek series does!)

I wanted to hate it....
Seth Macfarlane said this is an homage to "Star Trek", not a parody of it. There are in fact a few noticeable nods to ST:TNG. When you take it from that angle and realize it is a dramedy and not just supposed to be "Family Guy in Space: a Cynical Comedy", it's actually pretty good. The acting isn't terrible, the special affects and sets are well done. If you don't like Seth Mafarlane's brand of humor, I don't think you'll like it, but it is different. Based on critic reviews, I was expecting this to be hokey and painful but it really wasn't.

Great SF
Well, in my view the creation/production/writing teams behind Star Trek: Lensflareverse and Star Trek:Discoball should all watch this, and then be utterly ashamed of themselves! This show can be very serious, tackle make you think issues, when appropriate be literally laugh out loud funny, and even write pure science fiction.None of that would matter though if the cast weren't delivering good portrayals.

Good But, The GAPS.
Now I love the Orville Season 1, good humor good effects. The thing I don't like is the GAPS, the parts of the episodes where the US Adverts were meant to be done when on their TV channels? Unlike other US series, this one did not remove the gaps for the adds. You be watching a episode and then zap the picture goes and is replaced by a black screen for about 5 seconds in our viewing time. And that that happens many times through every episode viewed! Now this is a pain since before they showed them on the Advert mad US TV, the episodes were just a normal length will zero gaps, they cut up i.e. Edit them after they are done to let in the many US advert breaks. I understand that, But no other series I've seen on DVD box set leave in the gaps of black pre-advert screens. All other just play the episodes as they were before the adverts was inserted. So if they had done no gaps I would have given this 5 stars?

Bland
Having read so many positive reviews I had high expectations for this show but regret to say that I was underwhelmed. Special effects are extremely good but acting and plots are mediocre at best and I gave up part way through the series as there are many more interesting shows to watch. A big thing is made at the show's beginning that the Orville is a mediocre, mid-level command but then it proves that the ship has an exceptional and highly talented crew while the interior shots suggest the ship is as large as the Next Generation Enterprise. Why set up such a premise to almost immediately ditch it? The original Star Trek had a much surer touch when combining humor with action while Galaxy Quest, the excellent British series Hyperdrive or the brilliant web series Voyage Trekkers all demonstrate how to do a truly humorous Star Trek spoof.

Brilliant series.
Brilliant scifi.Funny lots of the time but the humour doesn't detract from the seriousness of the social issues addressed in some episodes and the writing and acting are excellent.Shame that there isn't a blu-Ray version.

ENTERTAININGLY OUT OF THIS WORLD
2418. Ed Mercer is unexpectedly appointed Captain of The Orville. Great, until he discovers his second-in-command is Kelly, the wife quickly dumped after found in bed with an alien. Prepare for sparks to fly as the spaceship explores the universe....Welcome here Seth MacFarlane's brainchild, he playing Ed and writing several episodes. Great fun his creation is too, special effects especially awesome. Some may be surprised by the range of storylines presented: a mixture of humour (admittedly some of it juvenile), thrills, scares (Ep.11, anyone?) and certain issues very thought provoking.Examples of more serious issues? What of a culture where the birth of a girl necessitates immediate remedial action? How about a civilization based on a monstrous lie (what they consider the world in fact a massive spaceship, ruthless leaders dealing most strongly with those who dare hint otherwise)? Elsewhere a rigidly enforced religion stems from a misunderstanding over a thousand years earlier when space travellers temporarily landed. Have those on The Orville any right to interfere? In short, there is far more to the show than many might expect, this increasingly appreciated after an episode or two. It is also a show evolving all the while, creators impressed by fans showing such enthusiasm for the more serious themes. Not everything works, but generally all twelve episodes have much to offer, the cast doing full justice to scripts so inventive. Some interesting guest stars too - among them an unrecognizable Rob Lowe clearly having fun.The bonuses are also worth checking out, especially the 2018 PaleyFest session where cast and producers look back with affection on the season just completed.)Originally critics were sniffy. Not so millions of viewers quickly most vocal about a show they were enjoying so much. So, worth checking out. I am glad I did.
