Franklin BES2100 Merriam Webster Spanish to English Electronic Dictionary

I bought this to replace another model bought 3 years ago, (Franklin DBE-1490 Spanish/English Dictionary). The old one was rather bulky and I lost it because it would not fit in my pocket, so not that portable. The old one also had disk style batteries and these were expensive and never handy when you needed them. The new one has many advantages over my older model, mainly smaller so very portable, nicer looking and pronunciation/sound option for everything.It also has a proper English dictionary (English words with English definitions) which is an added bonus. This feature would also be useful for higher level Spanish learners of English, as they are encouraged to avoid translations when possible and use the native English dictionary to understand the new word, only reverting to the translator if necessary.It also takes ordinary batteries which is a bonus (2 x AAA) so you don't have to plan ahead and keep spares of a size you will not use anywhere else.It has the usual games and conjugations. I am very pleased indeed with it. My only reason for not giving 5 stars is that it is not backlit, and unlike all our other screens nowadays, it is difficult to see in dim conditions. If they fixed this design feature, it would be PERFECT. I think it really deserves 4 1/2 stars without a backlight because in every other way it is the perfect portable Spanish-English (and English only) dictionary.

I bought this for my husband and he takes it everywhere with him. He already has a good Spanish vocabulary but this is easy to put in your pocket and has been helpful whilst out shopping or when conversing with Spanish friends. The whole thing is very easy to use and has a fantastic amount of information contained in it. Far easier than lugging about a regular dictionary. Great

Waste of money. I don't use it. Better off with a dictionary even if it is heavier and apps like wordlens make it obsolete if you have a smartphone.

I made this purchase as a replacement to another, which had limited function, but served me well. This one has a lot more functions, but is limited in scope in certain parts i.e. Thesaurus when compared to its printed version.The manufacturer has put too many functions sacrificing what was supposed to be language dictionary by description. The other thing I found is a high drain on the AAA batteries. I'll give it the benefit that I might be using inferior quality batteriesI've given the star rating for trying to put too many functions in and the suspected battery life, otherwise I'm well satisfied

Not a good product, the screen does not have any backlight, therefore, it is very hard to read unless you are in a very well lit area. The screen is also very small. The instructions provided are basic, it takes a long time to play with the machine before you fully understand all the operations. It does not convert sentences which anyone speaking or learning spanish is important as words in a sentence can give a different meaning once put into a sentence.

Franklin BES2100 MerriamIt does the job as a AS level spanish student. some words are missing but I get enough words definition from this little device. for the price this device is ok and is a great help when I read spanish and I don't have a internet connection. a little slow but again I don't mind. all in all if you want to spend little money and you think you may use it occasionnally so I would go for it. I didn;t spend much for it around £22 and I don't know why another one on the same site is 3 time the price so if you know why let me know the difference because mine seems to have all the feature that the more expensive one has.

Great little dictionary, with plenty of other useful functions. I'm beginner in Spanish, and I find the sounds and word lists very helpful.The device runs on two AAA batteries.The inside feels sturdy especially the buttons. Should really have come with a carrying pouch or sleeve.Instead you get a tonne of unreadable small prints/instruction 'guide'/ survey junk.The biggest let down is that the screen doesn't have any backlight.Note: the inside is black as shown in the picture above, but the outer side of the device is actually silver.

amazing little bit of kit.When folded it's less than half the size of a phone, if a bit thicker. perfect size to just stick in your pocket.Large vocabulary as well as bunch of extras like: calculator, currency conversion, games, note taking and the ability to read csv files. With a little jiggery pokery I reckon I can get a german english dictionary on it as well.The spanish side is great - all the words and phrases (thousands of them all quickly acccesible via search) are spoken by actual people.A man and a woman. The woman speaks very fast so is good for genuine language comprehension.Exactly what I wanted.
