Highlander Outdoor ProductsSkirmish Rucksack Molle Tactical Military Army Pack 35L Day Travel Bag Back Pack - All Terrain Camo
D**Y
questionable capacity
The pack was bought to use primarily as an economic (small) dog carrier. The pictures show my old Berghaus Munro 35 which is very effective for the dog carrier task, now our other dog is getting a bit frail and we needed a second sack.SIZEI've parked this new sack along side it to illustrate my title statement. The Highlander - camo coloured, is filled with a pillow for test purposes, the old sack is full of expedition gear. They are both sold as 35 litre capacity but the Highlander sack is 2" (50mm) shorter and narrower than the Berghaus. A quick calculation and I would suggest that there is as much as 5l difference in the sizes, not sure if that means berghause is 40l or this pack is 30l. The shoulder straps are easily lower by the same amount - this makes the back very short. As a just over 1.85m male this makes the back feel very truncated. The size (length) also means that the waist strap, on me, is up around the bottom of my ribs. It would/might work for a child, possibly around the 1.5m mark.QUALITYI've probably been spoilt by having a quality rucksack to compare it with. At less than a third of the price, although the quality isn't nearly a match, I don't think it's too bad for value for money - you get what you pay for. But to give a review of it, the materials seem quite floppy - my old pack is over thirty years old and still seems stiffer. The internal back stiffener is also very floppy and sewn in so I couldn't modify it. The shoulder straps are padded but I don't think they will be very comfortable for extended periods as they too seem thin and flimsy.DESIGNThis pack is sold as "molle" pack and it does indeed have all the webbing attachment points. The ones on the side, however, are exactly the same width as the attachment straps on the water carrier. This means it is very difficult to push the strap through (had to use a pencil to push it through ). Poor manufacturing that could be easily remedied without costing anything - just needs 2mm more space between rows of stitching. I bought a chest strap as there was no mention of having one. When I fitted it there was no way to keep it where you need it up at the chest, it just slides down the shoulder strap. I could remedy this by making a hole (where is my soldering iron?) and securing with a cable tie, but a good design shouldn't need this. No compression straps to stabilise the load. There is a pocket on the lid, inside, in the lining. This is right up by the hinging of the lid and means everything falls out when you open its zip as the lid is lifted into the air - would make more sense to have the zip on the free edge of the lid as you would be lifting to get access. To sum up - its cheap quality, I'd say for children carrying sandwiches and maybe a waterproof while having an adventure in the woods or paintballing it would be ok. It won't last a lifetime! I'm not sure it will carry an elderly 9kg dog on the walks he can no longer cope with.Since I wrote those initial impressions I've used it in earnest. The summing up is true, it's really cheap quality. There is no stiffening in it so the load slides about. There are no compression straps to counter act this. It's very small on the back length - not suitable for a male of average height (and probably below average chest!) as I said. It did carry a 9kg dog about 2km up hill, but it all felt a bit "on the limit" - like when you get that uneasy feeling in the handles of a plastic carrier bag that you've put too much shopping in.I would recommend spending a bit more on a "walkers'" brand of rucksack (my personal preferences would be berghaus and karrimor - thats only because I haven't had experience of others) it will be worth the investment for the comfort and design features - without considering the life-expectancy. Or you look at a specialist dog carrier...
