N0T SUITED FOR CREATING SEARCHABLE IMAGE PDFS
I really, really wanted to like this device, because the design is brilliant-all book scanners should be like this one. But unfortunately, I am converting a lot of books to searchable image pdfs, and this device does not create suitable images. First of all, I ran this on windows 10, and every 20 minutes or so I would get an access violation error message and have to restart the program. I installed it on a second computer, with the same result. The software does not save your brightness, contrast, etc. settings, so every time you restart, you have to calibrate the image again. This is not practical if you are doing a lot of scanning. The good thing about this device is that it scans the page all the way to the spine with no curvature. Unfortunately, the lighting inside the box results in images with uneven brightness. The part of the image toward the spine is dark and it gets lighter toward the right half of the page, sometimes the text letters were getting a little bit washed out. I fiddled with the brightness, contrast, etc. settings, but nothing fixed it. It might have something to do with room lighting, because when I threw a blanket over the device, the image brightness was much more even. But, again , this is not a practical solution if you scan a lot. You also get a reflection from the facing page onto the page you are scanning. I have added an image showing the reflection, and two images of a page-one with uneven brightness, and another of the same image when I threw a blanket over the device. The software also saves the image in jpeg only with compression of 75. You cannot save in tiff or png, and you can't adjust the compression. If you are creating editable pdfs, this device might be fine, but if you are creating image, or searchable image pdfs, this device is not suitable for its' $1700 price tag.The platen is also made of acrylic, not glass- it is a huge dust magnet-I could not keep it dust free no matter how many times I wiped it. Hopefully, the creators of this device can improve it to address these issues, an inverted v is the way all book scanners should be designed.

Did Not Scan Like It Was Supposed To
The instructions to install the software for Smart Book Scanner were vague. The South Korean technology is good. I can not give a fair or good review. The scanner did not scan entire page in the right orientation. When the problem is fixed, it will work like it suppose to. I hope the manufacturer will improve on the ease to install and ease to use the book scanner.

This makes the rest of humanity look stupid!
It's brilliant, that is. Yet, it sits alone in a sea of book scanners that are copies of each other's simple-minded, inefficient and ineffective designs. I bet the person who invented it is pretty happy. How could life ever get you down if you can always remind yourself that you invented this brilliant contraption? It required at least two realizations: 1) that the operator doesn't have to see the pages to scan a book, and 2) that books are not designed to open flat. Xerox did us all a disservice by designing their machines with flat glass scanner beds for paper and no accommodation for the comfort and safety of books.
