Education From A Comic Book
I actually came across Garth Ennis quite by accident. I have been reading Über by Kieron Gillen. Impressed by the level of detail that went into that highly polarizing book, I decided to research into Gillen's thought processes for the writing of the story. I came across an interview in which he states: "I'm not Garth Ennis..." That set me wondering if there was someone out there with even greater knowledge than had been shown by Gillen in Über. I decided to look up this "Garth Ennis". This book had good ratings and seemed a good place to start. The book was packaged and delivered with utmost care and efficiency. I have read the first 2 stories in it and decided not just to buy the volume 2 of this book, but to get the War Stories volumes 1 and 2 also by Garth Ennis. This man is a born storyteller. The first story, which dealt with the role of female Soviet bomber pilots in the defence of their motherland was an education in itself. By the end of that story I felt I'd got my money's worth. Then came the BRILLIANT second story. This was a masterpiece in showing the effects of war on those is TRULY touches. The third story is looking pretty good already, but even if it proves less than the first 2, Ennis has a new fan here...Heck I might even start reading Punisher Max if this guy keeps going like this.

War Stories for Grown Ups
I enjoyed Warlord, Battle and The Victor as a kid and that smart fellow Garth Ennis has built on the winning formula of those comics to write these war stories for grown ups. They are gritty, pack a punch to the guts and are carefully researched to help ensure authenticity. Above all else, they involve wonderful story telling albeit with an element of fact. These are essential reading for fans of Mr Ennis, Gary Leach and war buffs in general.

Excellent Collection of 3 stories with realistic content and artwork
Excellent Collection of 3 stories with realistic content and artwork. Let down slightly by the terrible approximation of a Geordie accent in the final tale.

There are no heroes in war, only victims.
This might be Ennis' finest work to date. It pulls no punches and wrenches at your guts and your heart. Ennis has largely abandoned his dark edgy humour here to pay homage to the heroes and victims of wwii. As always, Ennis' true strength is in the layered and realistic characters he writes. This has clearly been a labour of love, the research he has done to get everything historically accurate is to be commended. After reading the first story I was blown away but then I read story 2 Dear Billy and I don't think I've ever been affected by a comic story the way that affected me. It stayed with me for days. It's a true masterpiece from the first panel to the last. Not for kids, this is war and how it affects the people who experience it and how it often dehumanises those who are drawn into it.
