Uncle Sam does not do well when newspaper carrier throws newspaper into him when delivering. It broke. Am ordering a new one. My third over the past 5 years. I would spray it with a Sun Blocker spray to protect it from the Sun. I have Uncle Sam on top of my bricked Mailbox column. Holds up well in my opinion. Lol.

I broke my wife’s Uncle Sam, she treasures all her Knick knacks, so I ordered this Uncle Sam. I wasn’t sure when I ordered if it would take the place of the one I broke, but she was really happy with this Uncle Sam.

Uncle Sam is (literally) an American icon, so when Amazon offered me one for review purposes, I was definitely interested. We have family members in the service, so there's a certain amount of decor in the house with a military/patriotic theme. Although intended for use as an outdoor garden figure, my Uncle Sam is currently doing duty on the fireplace mantle among the family military memorabilia.A resin figure, right out of the box it has a pleasing amount of weight. The surface has the look of a figure carved out of wood. It has a nice amount of detail, including the intricate red white and blue suit. The colors are bright, but with a weathered look to give the impression of age. The flag in the right hand is a simple wood and cloth version; it's a separate piece. The pole will slide right down through the hand. I wrapped a little bit of duct tape around the bottom to keep it in place.The only detail that doesn't quite match the now standard depiction of Uncle Sam is the full chin beard, instead of a goatee like the James Montgomery Flagg version everyone has seen from the WW I recruiting poster. If you're a purist, that may put you off. (Historically, Uncle Sam has been depicted with differing facial hair styles and dress.) That detail may be a consequence of design and production. Design Toscano founders cite the influence of European statuary for their initial products beginning with gargoyles and branching out from there. (This figure is manufactured in China.) Regardless, there's no mistaking who this is supposed to be, and the overall execution of the figure is still pleasing.Although intended for outdoor use (with some suggestions for protecting it from the extremes of winter frost and snow), the base has four little stick on foam pads for indoor use on a table or other surface. It looked like the ones on the bottom of mine were applied in a hurry. I peeled two of them off and repositioned them to make it more stable.At 18 inches high and with that red, white, and blue suit, Uncle Sam will make an impression wherever you end up putting him.
